Sure thing BigSlide! The series is mostly about a dark elf named Drizzt Do'Urden. If you don't know D&D/Forgotten Realms, dark elves are an evil race of elves. Drizzt ends up being an affectionate / compassionate character, far from the norm of his evil race. The story is about how he is able to survive (primarily due to his fighting skills), overcome the enmity of his race, and how he finds much-needed companions along the way.BigSlideHimself wrote:Verran, I'm really curious about those books. I've seen them everywhere and I always try to pick up a vibe from them by reading the blurb or a couple of pages, but I'm still pretty clueless. Can you clue me in on the appeal and overall story?

Refiner's Fire, the first novel by Mark Helprin. He wasn't quite in the Winter's Tale zone yet but was pretty good already. Better than his later books, I think.
Ooh, Winter's Tale. Being in a blizzard makes me want to reread that again.
I just got Hackers and Painters, which looks brilliant. Some of the essays in it are also online at the same site.
