18-25yrs? Driving+Cell phone = old age

Post by CDN_Merlin »

Just for Mobi
"If you put a 20-year-old driver behind the wheel with a cellphone, his reaction times are the same as a 70-year-old driver," said David Strayer, a University of Utah psychology professor and principal author of the study. "It's like instant aging."
Wow, thank god I'm not in that age group. :P

I have a slow reaction time to boot- I always thought that the issue was decreased awareness.

I wonder if that's why I can't get an erection and frequently wet my pants when I'm on my cellphone.

It's illegal to hold a cellphone while driving over here...

We don't have that problem :)

(wonder how many of you will get offended. Lothar probably.)

Tricord you may be a d*ck, but in this instance, I'm in agreement as well.

I got rear-ended (on the highway) by a guy who was on his cellphone. I was at a complete stop. He hit me so hard that my truck really smooshed the 2005 altima in front of me.

According to him, he was doing around between 40 & 50 when he hit me. Luckily I was wearing my seat belt.

And it doesn't matter whether the phone is hand-held or handsfree, he said. Any activity requiring a driver to "actively be part of a conversation" likely will impair driving abilities, Strayer said.
I guess that means I have to tape my kids' mouths shut while we are in the car together.

1. STFU Mobius

2. Merlin, he does have a point. Breaking word wrap isnt very nice. I use a high resolution but I dont nessecarily always browse in full screen, and having to horizontal scroll is a PITA. You could use a different form of the url tag that would create a 1 word hyperlink Much like what you see on any othwer website.

Useage:

[ url="url" ]Clickable Text[ /url ]

Without the spaces in the tags.

As much as Mobius does need to STFU, he's right; having to scroll sideways at 1024x768 is never a good sign.

Having a law that makes driving with a cellphone illegal would be nice and would make driving more enjoyable. Its been progressive but every year more and more people dont take driving seriously and the roads are more dangerous as a result of it. That and the state doesnt seem to give a damn anymore.

And I ditto Mobius.

There was a local ordinance passed in a township near where I live banning them, in response to the death of a little girl who was hit by a woman who ran a stop sign while talking on the phone. I think it was removed for some technical reason or another, but I know my state legislature has at least considered it in the past.

dude come on. just because you're too lazy to use the url tags for your link doesn't mean you can force us to bump up our resolution. It's like posting a 1600x1200 image and yelling at us to up our resolution because you can't be bothered to resize it.

use some freakin courtesey next time.

If you don't have enough brains to pull over when you chat on a cell phone, then you deserve to hit a pole and take yourself out of the gene pool.

Why pull over? They don't have "handsfree" in Canada.

Yeah we do, but if you don't have a hands free phone, then pull over.

don't ban cell phone usage in cars, that's just dumb

require that drivers must pass a test, if they pass the test then allow them to place a sticker on their plate which symbolizes that

if they cannot pass the test, then they cannot use cellphones while driving

just because some people are incapable of having a conversation while driving does not mean that everyone should be punished

Not being able to talk on your phone while driving isn't a punishment. Other than a major emergency, what type of call is so important that you can't pull over first to answer it? And how about the, oh, 85 or so years of driving when cell phones weren't around? Were they being punished, too? :P

In NY they have passed a law that the only cell phone usage while driving must be hands free 3 years ago.

Traffic Violations start at $150 on 1st offense (go against your license)and or including a recklous driving ticket in which they can revolk your license on the spot. they pull up next to you and take your picture on the phone... no way to dispute the charge :)

The price of a hands free kit is less than half the price of your first ticket AND LESS DANGEROUS

They shall be passing a federal law on this soon enough.

I find it hard to believe that people can't manage to drive and hold a conversation at the same time. Pretty depressing that 90% of the country can't do two things at once.

I think we may have had a thread similiar to this in the past and it was testi who humoursly brought up the banning of short skirts being worn by passengers because they can cause more of a distraction to the driver than holding a conversation over the phone.

Dude, 90% of the drivers on the roads now can't drive for ★■◆●, and you expect them to be able to hold a conversation and drive at the same time?! What fantasy world do you live in? Hell, in Memphis if theres so much as a snowflake falling on the ground, theres an accident at atleast every other intersection. It even worse in LA. Spend a few years behind the wheel, and then see if you still hold that opinion.

MD, even here, if there's a dusting of snow (which makes the roads slippery) people think they are GOd and indestructable and drive like maniacs just cause they have winter tires.

Man, I have Bridgestone Blizzaks and I can still slide. People in general are stupid when it comes to driving.

in Colorado, the rule was that you didn't drive during the first snowstorm of the season.

All the n00bs would go out in the first snowstorm and crash, because they don't know how to drive when there's white stuff on the ground. By the second snowstorm, they'd either learned their lesson, or crashed, so then it was safe to drive.

I'd agree with a ban of using cell phones while driving, but only if we ban the aforementioned 70 year olds from driving too.
