Dedicated web server using Duron?

A friend of mine is looking into purchasing a dedicated server to host a few of his sites, as well as re-host some as well.

The only thing is the server he's looking at is running a AMD Duron 1.3ghz.

I know the Duron is a low end (aka "budget") cpu, but how does it perform as far stability is concerned?
I did some googling, but nothing really seemed to touch on this aspect of the chip.
Just it's performance (ala benchmarks) and price etc.

Need RAM and HD space for server not CPU much.

Ya, but it's just the CPU I'm curious about.
Wondering as a budget CPU how stable it is.

Most likely, the server will just be running Linux, Apache, Tomcat, MySQL and/or PostgreSQL.

It should work fine. from what I remember, the Duron and Celeron's just have less onboard cache but it runs at full cpu speed.

that duron is way more then enough

The SQN servers were favorites on the west coast when bob had his T1. They were only 933MHz if I remember right.

Well, I'm not talking about speed, but reliability.
I was wondering if the server was more likely (how much more?) to go down if it's running a Duron instead of an XP or P4 etc..

The Duron architecture is tried and true, no worries with stability and such. There wouldn't be any difference between the XP, the P4 and the Duron anyways, so yeah don't worry about that. As far as stability, I would worry more about RAM and power supply.

FWIW, no stability problems here with my Duron 700 running Folding 24/7.

If he's thinking about commercial hosting, he's in for a nasty shock. Give it to someone else. He doesn't need the hassle, and if he thinks hosting is hassle free, he's dreaming.

Unless you're hosting a whole bunch of people at once running all kinds of scripts and the like, that Duron will be more than enough. Hell, I overclocked the ★■◆● out of my old duron 700 a couple years back and it ran quite stable. They may not be the most powerful chips on the block, but they're damn reliable.
