SETI @ Home

Post by Robo »

I was wondering how many people still run this, and how much CPU time they have on it?

I used to run it all the time but I've only recently begun running it again.

We have a whole forum here for distributed computing projects.

I've switched over to Folding@Home because it seems more useful than SETI...

Why is it not surprising to see Mobius's name near the top of that list? :P

And I agree with Lothar; as cool as SETI is, Folding@Home does a lot more good.

...because I only have 3 PCs running it - that's why.

Currently I'm at 9347 WU's completed, which translates to about 8 or so years of CPU time.

Yes it's probably a waste of time, because no self respecting civilisation will use the Electromagnetic Spectrum to communicate. (Yes, I know WE do! I repeat, no self respecting civ...)

Us looking for radio signals is like American indians trying to catch telegraphs by looking for smoke signals on the horizon.

However, we *MIGHT* find a non-self respecting civilisation (like ours) that sent signals thousands of years ago. That in and of itself would justify the entire program. (And hopefully destroy religion in the process).

When that happens, I'll switch to folding.

Interestingly, I recently went to a lecture by Kent Cullers (Here: http://www.seti.org/site/pp.asp?c=ktJ2J9MMIsE&b=179058 )- he's the world's first blind physicist, and he designed the algoryhtms which search the signals for signs of intelligent origin. Fascinating guy - and if you'd gone too, you'd be running SETI as well. :)

Ok genius, if no self respecting civilization would use the EM Spectrum to communicate, what spectrum do you suggest we start using?

And what the hell is with you and your vendetta against religion anyway? We believe what we want and you believe (or dont) what you want.

I don't think I've ever seen Mobius reply to a thread in which he's made one of his "looney" posts. Funny, isn't it?

We should start a "Ban Mobius" campaign. Sick of him. Too cowardly to reply to my post.
