BEFSR41 or BEFSX41?

I was shopping for a router for my new cable connect when I found that Linksys now makes a BEFSX41 model with some kind of "Stateful packet inspection" firewall.

Should I go for that SX one or will the old-skool SR be enough for me?

X also has a 100 Mbit WAN port vs the R 10 Mbit, I have an X, it is a bit nicer then the R, I reccommend it.

10 or 100 WAN port won't make much difference if you use it to connect to an ISP as the most you'll get now is about 5Mbit.

Routers have a long life span, and the need for 100 Mbit WAN ports is growing.

Yeah I agree but I tihnk at the rate things are chaning, he'll be buying another router within 3 yrs which I doubt he'd get higher than 10Mbit connect from home.

Get the X
I have the R and with some cable modems it limits u to 600-700KB/s because of the 10Mbit wan port, if ur ISP gives u that much anyway

My older Mota SB3100 was limited to 650KB/s because of it, but my newer SA Webstar isn't as bad, I get just about 1MB/s. W/o the router I get 1.1MB/s tho(my cap)

You d/l at 1 MegaByte/sec or Megabit/sec? I do 600KB which is just over 1/2 Megabit. I've only seen MegaBytes at school.

all network stuf is done in BITs 8bits=1byte so ruffley 10mbit is about 1.25MByte/s 100mbit = 12.5MByte 1000mbit = 125MByte thats not the exact number but its close

Matrix has a 9999/999 cable modem, he can download at over 1 megabyte per second and is limited by a 10 mbit WAN port.

Wait a minute, I thought the R has 100 mbit port!

I just did a speed test now, and I got:

Your download speed : 3128583 bps, or 3055 kbps.
A 381.9 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 243991 bps, or 238 kbps.

Which is around what I got before the router.

So I dont have to switch routers because of the switch speed, im already getting a fast download with it being 100 mbit. But are the other features worth the extra $20?

If you are only getting 381.9 Kb then you are not even maxing your 10Mbit router.

version 3 of the R has a 100Mbit WAN port, the older ones are 10Mbit

they're both good. i had the R, and it was sweet. i'd just get the cheaper one if it were me.

I just got this one. Has VPN capability and a much more robust control panel than the Linksys. Cool stuff like an infinite number of port forwarding slots, unlike the BEFSR, which really pissed me off. So far it's been bulletproof.

justdeals has em refurbed for like 35 bucks. I just checked it, right now I think they're only stocking the one with the German power adapter, which means you'd have to go to Radio Shack and pick up an adapter for it.
