New video card

Post by DarkShadow »

Asus A7V333
MGE Vigor 450 PSU
Athlon XP 2400+
Micron 512 PC2700
ATI Radeon 9000 Pro 128
Win XP Pro

Got about $150 to spend. Anyone got any idea what is the best video card that will work with that Motherboard.

I was looking at this

or this if that one isn't compatible with the A7v.

Any other suggestions?

Your first choice is the better of the two cards....and it will work in an agp 4x mobo.

Are you under the impression an ATI 9600XT is any kind of match against an nVidia 6600GT? o_O

The 6600GT will annihilate a 9600XT in every situation. It's not even in the same manufacturing generation!

And what on earth do you mean "If its not compatible"? How is it conceivable an AGP card wouldn't work in an A7V? They don't call it the "AGP Standard" for nothing!

Short version: "get the 6600GT".

He is right in this case though, the 6600 GT takes out the 9800XT handly, the 9600XT isn't even worth looking at.

Vanilla 6800 (AKA 6800NU = Non Ultra), then the 6800 GT, then the 6800 Ultra.

No but they were the only 2 I could find in the price range I have for a place I trust.

Nice pick.

Just so you know, the 2x/4x/8x thing is just the multiplier of the base clockspeed (or frequency) of AGP. What you should be worried about is only what version of AGP it is, and what version your board has. I can tell you right off the bat your board has AGP v2.0. AGPv3 introduced the 8x multiplier if memory serves. Hey Bubbalou, maybe this would be a good time to post that image of the different AGP slots for future reference.

I still have an AGP 4x slot from the stone age, will those 8x cards work good on the slower port? I heard somewhere that 8x wasn't really too much faster.

here ya go, the universal ones are the ones to be careful with.

Until you check your motherboard specs you have no idea. Unless it came with a GeForce then you know at least 1.5V(AGP 2.0 Spec 1X/2X/4X)! Not 3.3V (AGP 1.0 spec 1X/2X) for like older types like Voodoo 3-6 cards.

Well I have had the card for awhile now and considering I'm stuck on a 2.0Ghz XP2400+ it still runs good. Though I would guess very CPU limited.

Can play morrowind at full settings now and can play Doom3 and Fry Cry on high settings with good FPS.

Thanks for all the help.:)

wrong mobius. there are different AGP ports, that are all considered a "standard" in its own way

Go Geforce 6600GT or ATI Radeon 9800 Pro, both are about the same speed, 6600GT might be a bit more expensive. Both are right around your price range.

Isn't it funny when someone bumps an old thread and skimmers just start replying to the first post all over again?

I didn't think so either.

I can confirm this. I have a 6600Gt and a guy I LAN with has a 9800 PRO. We get about the same rates, kinda depending on environment as each has it's own "specalty".

Glad to hear you're please with your choice DS. :)
