Honors societies...?
Honors societies...?
It seems like a joke that I've only completed one semester but have already received two invitations to national honors societies, particulary "Phi Eta Sigma NHS" and "National Society of Collegiate Scholars." I realize that some of these look good on applications and resumes, but which ones? Or any? Or am I right that these ones are just trying to play to my flattery to get me to send in money for membership?
When I first got in business, it wasn't too long that I got a notice about being chosen for entry into that years "Who's Who In Business". Of course there was a expensive book to buy and my vanity demanded I get this so I could see my name in print. Afterwards I realised this is just a suckers publication where the publisher makes big bucks off self absorbed people like me.
Jeff, may be the same goes for the honor society thing.

Yes, that's an actual letter. My dad and I registered extra ID's using the names Ford Prefect and Arthur Dent for COMDEX one year (using free registration forms) because Douglas Adams was presenting for one of the companies. We've gotten a lot of spam sent for those names, but that one was by far the best.
Heh, Phi Beta Kappa sent me a letter, I signed it, and now I'm in. Never went to a meeting, and I got my pin/key via mail. But, it does take up a line on my resume...Agreed, most of them are silly. The only one I've ever heard taken seriously is Phi Beta Kappa.
I bet with all of these you get out of it what you put into it. It could probably be good networking for you if you participated in them.
