ok here is the log file contents:
that is to say... it works perfectly now. (well actually get a sdl parachute if i try to go to multiplayer if i am not root...) but the single player works great, the bots fly right, the automaps in the windows don't cause the graphic errors.

i don't know what you did, but 1.5.43-linux is teh good!!!

No parachute for me when doing multi as non-root ...

that bothers me a little too... but i am not going to worry about it just this moment (it didnt leave anything in teh log file...) i will look at it a little later, it may have been another issue that hit at the same time.

just wanna point out that I will not be using linux for the time being...until I submit the order to newegg for my new computer:

ATi drivers have really screwed up on me (always had, but never this bad), and I have no desire to reinstall Gentoo when I would be installing it again in a few weeks anyways. I'll be using Windows 2000 for the meantime

New Linux version with improved log file behaviour and improved folder detection available.
