It's really not much of a tradition. It's just an ornament that my mom found in a store. The card that came with it said to put it on an inside branch as a sort of hidden reminder of the crucifixion, to remind us of what the true purpose of Christ's birth actually was. Trust me, it's not that big of a deal, and there's nothing creepy about it . The ornament is about 5-6 inches long and is made of metal, steel I'm assuming.
