I just dont see the harm in trying, where the benifits are, everyone doesnt have to re-register. We have all our old history. I think on the d3kbb even my logo was transfered!

Nope, the D3kBB didnt even have avatars, those were hacked in to ubb_library2.pl, they are ignored.

Do you realize how much of a power trip you appear to be on when you just say that and offer no reason?
I was unaware that Sickone appointed you DBB dictator. My bad.

Acutally I was just guessing back then, I actually measured it today, its about twice that fast (370 posts per minute average). It would require about 12 hours to convert the DBB in its current state. Less time if the computer converting it is faster then my server (1.65 GHz Athlon XP w/512 MB RAM).
[Edit: You are correct Xciter, it is like doing a clean OS install rather then updating. First you back up your documents, then you format the drive and instal the new OS, then you restore your documents.]
And you need not download the entire DBB to run the conversion, it can be run directly on the DBB server.

1st reason you posted:
<font face="Arial" size="3">No profiles or accounts will be transfered... starting on a clean slate and the convertor would be far to slow for a board of this size. After it all up and running I may go and give those with high post count and ranking their numbers back... but we'll see.</font>

2nd reason you posted:

How is that a reason?
3rd reason you posted:

"Jim, the hacks are UBB scripts. They won't even be touched by the convertor! All the convertor looks for is the individual users (which going by the time it took to convert the D3kBB, maybe a couple of minutes) and the individual threads (which MAY take a couple of hours, even on a BB of this size). Thats it. The hacks will remain over here, and we'll get a clean and stable BB." -MD

I don't see what the problem is about making people re-register... would definitely weed out the active accounts from the inactive ones.

Duplicate users: at the time when I got the duplicate user accounts it was because I accidentally ran the user conversion twice. I ran the conversion again yesterday and I got only one user account for each.
The converter will not run any slower on the internet then on a LAN, because like phpBB and UBB, all the processing is done server side, the only thing that runs over the net is the server sending you a small page that automatically refreshes every 120 seconds/1000 topics/or 5000 users finished (& those are configureable), telling you the progress.
Errors, the UBB I converted did actually run out of disk space a long time ago, so there is one thread in a forum that is 0 bytes, the converter gives a error when it encounters this thread, but all you have to do is click next and it resumes work. You dont have to convert the threads (which given the size of the DBB and how long it would take I cant blame you there) you can check boxes about what you want to convert. You can uncheck the convert forums and convert threads boxes and it will only copy the users, doing all 2000 users on the DBB would probably take less then 5 minutes and everyone would be happy because post counts come over when the converter runs.
If you think 12 hours is too much time, think about this: Its 12 hours converting everything, or months listening to the countless users bitching that "I want this post back" or "Fix my post count back to where it was". If the conversion is too long of a time for you, find someone who does have the spare time to run it for you. Its not like you are paid to run this and everyone is expecting you personally to handle it all.
Stability; someone ran this converter on over 150,000 posts sucessfully, it WILL run for 12+ hours if nessasary.
When I was converting the D3kBB I had to remove all the categories or the forums inside them failed to convert, this is why I reccommended a test conversion elsewhere first. One that doesnt matter if it gets screwed up, doesnt matter if it hogs CPU time, just a test so you know what to do in order to get it right the first time when you are actually ready to do the real conversion on the real server. But if you dont want to run a test conversion you dont have to, just take some precautions first, backup the database on the destination forum, remove the categories from the UBB forum, scan for 0 byte threads and remove them completely. If you dont want to convert the threads I dont really care, but you should convert the users because that really would save a hell of a lot of time for everyone. I cant think of a good reason or need to "weed out" the inactive users, they are using a irrelevant amount of server space. The only place I could imagine too many users would be a problem is changing settings in the UBB control panel, fortunately phpBB uses a COMPLETELY different system for users that is a lot easier to work with for finding one user out of thousands.

...are all we arguing about is post counts?
Post counts are not hard to convert or hard to 0 and start over. Either way is easy as far as getting them from the UBB (has nothing to do with how many posts there actually are). I don't know how they are stored in phpBB though. If it actually tallies your counts from all the threads, then I guess everyone just has to deal with it.
Otherwise, it's up to the people paying from their pocket. Deal.
<-- emo tears for whiners.
IMO, it's not worth converting the threads themselves. We lose a couple of current threads. Whoop-dee-doo. Maybe we can store the old DBB somewhere else for reference, or maybe we can convert some of the newer ones and leave the older ones. Whatever the case is it's not really crucial. What's important is getting the functionality and look/feel the same which MD and Tetrad and whoever else have done a superb job in.

Just converting some of the newer threads is a great idea! Just backup the UBB, then prune all threads older then 1-3 months, and convert, cant be much more then 20,000 posts. That would only take 1 hour of conversion time instead of 12!
I'd still go for a user only conversion tho, because along with post counts it also preserves the date registered, email address and password so its seamless to the user.

i can understand why you would rather archive this DBB than convert it, but why not allow a few simple mods? i had admin access to the old |UF| BB on a previous build of phpbb, and i saw some of the great mods on there. they never cause any problems and were not hard to set up.
don't have to go mod crazy, but some of them are very helpful and it would be foolish to outright say no without even seeing them for yourself.

Done.
Seems that spam filters nuke the confirmation e-mail... If anyone needs to be activated, please send me an e-mail or bug me on ICQ or AIM. (Chris VG1 being my AIM acct. Everything else is in my profile.) You'll get activated MUCH faster.

Yup, spam filters seem to catch those emails all the time, unfortunately. I cannot think of one such email that didn't get auto-delivered to my Bulk box on Yahoo. Even though I've sent a good batch of them to Yahoo's SpamGuard people as Not Spam.

I had the same problem on a phpBB2 I ran with authentication e-mails. I'd get bugged at least a couple times a week by people who never received an e-mail. Those were only the vocal ones; there's no telling how many there really were.

Yeah, its a real pain sometimes. I'll look into a way to change the subject so that it won't normally get blocked.
Anyways guys, feel free to go on a posting spree on the test site. If something breaks, make a post about it and be sure to be very detailed about what you were doing, what browser you use, etc. Be sure to verify with someone else that its broken before you make a post about it. (just to verify its not just your end) Just don't be stupid and post links to porn or something illegal. If it can't be posted on here, don't post it there.

Given what I've read about the UBB itself, I don't think its failure can be attributed to the hacks it has installed. I remember awhile ago we had quite a few more hacks installed on the DBB, and it seemed to work just fine.
However, I've read that UBB can't handle very high thread counts very well. Infopop recommends no more than 5000 threads per forum. Several of the DBB forums are well over that. Perhaps that's the cause of the problems that have plagued us?
Not that I don't think converting to phpBB is an unreasonable thought

The problem is not the hacks themselves. The problem is after the crashes and such, when the board was restored, something along the line b0rked things up. You know, mods trying to point to something that doesn't exist and error's out, etc. Thats why the search function was broken for so long.

I'm going to say it's probably the amount of times we've migrated from server to server. Something in the interum got screwed up.
The "sticky thread" hack was to blame for a couple of screwed up form issues. But other than that, anything that I wrote works fine (such as homepage icon, avatars, bold admin topics, etc) to the best of my knowledge.
I think if we reinstalled UBB from scratch a lot of problems (like search not working) would go away. But then again we wouldn't get a lot of the features that phpBB has.

Woo, the things I miss seeing when I just check a subset of the forums.
Registered over at the "test" board. Looks really good over there.
phpBB should be a vast improvement over UBB.
