all they really need to do is make up a reason and away you go!

If people in the Pakistani government hadn't been deliberately sheltering the guy we might have had more respect for their sovereignty.
The same thing would apply to you if you deliberately hid an escaped convicted murderer in your house, the police wouldn't just call and ask you for permission to come and recapture them...

Aye, but the code is more what you'd call "guidelines" than actual rules.'

If you had told me they found Osama in some hole in the desert, I might believe this story just as it's told. This guy was living in a house in the middle of town. EVERYBODY knew where Osama was

Exactly. There's a major Pakistani military base in the
same town as bin Laden's compound, not twenty minutes away. And you're telling me that no one in their intelligence services thought that the huge sealed-off compound with its own security guards that no one ever came out of was in the least bit suspicious? Because if so, there's a bridge I'd love to sell you. Pakistan is much more an ally of convenience than desire, and their looking the other way while bin Laden camped out in a big villa for several years demonstrates that as much as anything.
And Heretic, I don't recall saying that US forces should have carte blanche to take out anyone, anywhere, at any time. But a person at the level of Osama bin Laden, when we have his location pinned down after ten years of searching, and when we know that he's essentially getting safe harbor in his current location? Of course. Hell, that was the original justification for the invasion of Afghanistan...or should we have asked the Taliban's permission before doing that?

So with Obama upping the troops in Afghanistan, starting a new war in Libya and still stationing troops in Iraq, where is the press on this. If Bush was still in office the press would be calling for impeachment, posting American troop deaths everyday of the week and code pink would be running rampant in the halls of congress. Instead we have a press corp offering benign neglect when a Democrat is in charge. So I'd say the liberals are the real blood thirsty war mongers. See any anti-war protests lately? I rest my case.

If Bush were still in office, most Republicans would also think that a new war was a dandy and wonderful idea. It's partisan hackery, nothing more.

That follows as well. Like I said, it's partisan nonsense and it's always been like this. Republicans suddenly became anti-war doves when Clinton was in Kosovo, too.

Back on topic, it looks like the Obama junta has found the fall guy to protect their tushes:
"Washington (CNN) -- Kenneth Melson, acting director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, is expected to resign under pressure, perhaps in the next day or two, in the wake of the controversy over Operation Fast and Furious, two senior federal law enforcement sources said Monday."
Lets see if he will be a good soldier and make the T shaped abdominal cut quietly or will he sing like the proverbial canary.
