Yea, very poor choice of words “punished” makes it sound like an affliction, caused by someone else.

And blaming others for everything is a very ingrained problem in the American psyche.

"Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks." Was it just a poor choice of words? It's not an alien sentiment in our day. I've seen it elsewhere. Also the topic being discussed was abortion...

Giving people the benefit of the doubt is all well and good, and I might allow that Obama did not consciously twist an acknowledged truth on the spot to serve his purposes, but the saying is plainly designed to bring support to an otherwise unconscionable practice by twisting reality.

I would hope it was a poor choice of words…the alternative paints a bleak picture.

pretty much my thinking when, 7 years or so ago, I met and talked with a young fellow named Obama, and chose to support him with my time and finances. Imagine my dismay when, essentially upon taking office, one party basically failed to cooperate with this process altogether and his own party's left wing sniped at him constantly.
EDIT: At the same time, patience is a part of all progress, and you have to be experienced enough to know that sometimes things take a certain amount of time. As long as progress is being made... progress has been made.
see above, and realize that for nearly 6 years, this is EXACTLY what Obama has been trying to say to the nation.
The International Association of Fairy Tale Publishers called and said your story has been rejected. They said it was woefully trite. They suggested you try applying for a job as writer for a political campaign where such pap is often published.

nice retort....nothing whatsoever of substance, just some snarky little comment. What a patriot! I note you offer utterly ZERO by way of proof that anything I said was erroneous, exaggerated or wrong. Thanks for proving my initial point to Thorne.

I know it's a bit further afield, in a thread that already veered off course, but I wanted to post this link here for the sake of demonstrating exactly how to go about instilling moral standards(or at least doing one's part in the process). Hats off to the Coach and his staff!!

The tough question would be, why did it get to the place where they needed to take such extreme actions? If we're talking about a new coach, then good on him. If he's not a new coach then let's hope his failure to deal with his team effectively on an individual and incrementally level is also turned around with this action, because as a leader when you have to do a total reset like this it reflects badly on you.

are you really trying to imply that welfare would give them an excuse not to work?

If so, I would like to see you to spend one week as a welfare recipient and then tell us how things are.

I know of quite a few people who are second generation single teen mothers who think they are doing just fine on welfare and other assistance programs. They will gleefully tell you they had their third baby because that brought in the dollar amount they needed to get monthly and it is the most babies their grandmothers will raise for them while they continue having fun.
I wonder if they will assume the grandmothers role when their babies have babies?
