Don't misunderstand what you read. OSF Healthcare is a Catholic non-profit that specializes in acute care. That said, the cost of this level of care for people with special conditions also provides a return in the form of valuable research data, which eventually gives back to the system in the form of better, cheaper care. Another thing to consider is to how you derive meaning from numbers like "5% consume 50% of resources." You need to think carefully and ask if this distribution should be naturally linear or naturally exponential. I suggest reading a short couple paragraphs on the "Pareto Principle" written by Clay Shirky on this page. It's a good read.

um, no, but that is charmingly racist and stupid all at once. I am saying that our system prices decent, fundamental healthcare out of the reach of most people due to a host of complexities within our healthcare system. The core problem is health insurance as we have it, but there are other systematic problems, as well.

So what you are saying that we should let the govt. handle our insurance so we can wind up with health care on par with Native Americans. Sweet.

nice try, Woody, but no one ever suggested that. The government handles the health care of a few million elderly with a great deal of satisfaction. Just try taking Medicare away from them and see what happens at the polls. You know, the more you and others turn the entire ACA or healthcare issues into scary worst-case scenarios, the goofier you look.
