Yea, you’re supposed to care about other people, sure that is a given, but having no control over that other persons behavior kind of throws a monkey wrench into the picture.

sure, but that doesn't mean you can assume they are somehow undeserving of assistance, nor that you carry no responsibility to the larger society. Acceptance of that principle by a chunk of our society is going to become CRITICAL in coming years. If you find the current levels of 'wealth transfer' via a social safety net is objectionable, you won't be able to cope with what is going to be needed in a decade.
