Tyranny,
No offense taken. I didn't post this with the intention of it being flame-bait. Although, I suppose the topic itself is going to spark just that.

Pugwash,
The teacher was not handing out "religious material". The 5th grade students were discussing/studying The Declaration of Independence. One of them told their parents that the word "God" appeared and came into the discussion. According to the teacher and the rest of the students, the topic of God was discussed for less than 5 minutes, TOTAL. Next thing you know the principle and the anti-God heathens are throwing a fit.

It's to be expected with heathens.

DCrazy, that was me, Will, who suggested there is a lack of a defense...but I meant a lack of defense on the part of the school!

from Wills link:
"He hands out a lot of material and perhaps 5 to 10 percent refers to God and Christianity because that's what the founders wrote," said Thompson, a lawyer for the Alliance Defense Fund

I did not mean he was handing out bibles. Maybe I could have worded that better. However if ya want to be picky, as you can see he hands out "material", 10% of which refers to god and is therefore religous. Therefore he is handing out religeous material. :P

Oh, and another thing. This story raises the question "what the hell happened to common sense around here?". The principles actions seems ludicrous. But I guess that is another thread.

Common sense doesn't seem to be so common anymore. It went the way of 'responsible parents' and 'personal responsibility' and apparently became extinct. ;)

So I guess that dollar bill in your wallet is a religous document?
