I don't know, but I don't think my ship's weapons system is advanced enough to know the difference.

I know for a fact that my ship's weapons system does not discriminate...

Stopped playing this game well over a year and a half ago due to job, family and what appeared to be a failing population in the Descent community.

On a whim, I just happened to Google "Descent 4" out of sheer boredom (besides, imagine my surprise from my Google of Hitchhikers Guide only to find out that the 8 years they had been talking about a movie actually came to fruition) and came across the old stomping grounds of PlanetDescent, Descent3.net, DescentBB, etc...

Been catching up on numeruos threads and posts here, and see many names that bring back great memories (not to mention raise the hair on the back of my neck). I doubt many remember me, as I was nethier elite nor flagrant, just constant.

Just a quick word here, first off the fact that there are still so many very active people commited to this game and community speaks volumes, and I dont believe any of you should ever sell that short. Over the past few days, I have kept a running count of different names I have encountered in forums such as this or websites, and actively over the past 6 months I estimate there are actually over 340 people still involved with this game. 6 years from the last release, and there are still active servers??? I thought it was toast at the end of 2003, and yet here it is still alive and kicking.

Sidenote: Did anyone else get all tingly when Macrosoft announce the name of the new Xbox "360" (degrees????)

Anyway, just wanted put my 1.5 cents in and remind each of you of my previous reference to the "Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy" promise of a movie 8 years ago, and everyone had given up on it due to Douglas Adams death and so on. Dreams do come true.....

So keep the faith, fight the good fight, carry on thy wayward son, chip away at the stone, er..ran out of rock song titles...oh well, you get the point.

there are more people playing D1 than D3 these days. ouch.

the main reason i do not play anymore is that my computer just sucks.

since the popular levels are full of secondries, my computer simply CANNOT handle having 16 homers coming after me.

then when you take me out with your homers and BP plasma, I respawn in the server, BEFORE my computer shows me that i have; thereforeim dead again before even i even knew i had respawned.

also, the lack of for fun games these days.
taunts have been ruined becuase of the jackasses constantly playing the same crappy clip. elitest macros and the whining.

i miss the days of a free for all, funny taunt ridden game. XTA 'glyphics anyone? :D :D

Well D1 lasted me a couple months. I might try it again once I install 98 SE... but UT2004 is so much more fun in 16 vs 16 CTF games in lag where my shots actually hit 99% of the time! :)

The main reason I have not played D3 since before summer is... lack of excitement. Sometimes I actually hate the game when I play it. Same goes for D1 and D2. Other times it can be moderately enjoyable though!

The Indika game I played in a few days back with several players much more experienced than myself brought a new meaning to "excitement," believe you me. :P

Heh.. I was in that game Top Gun...

Let me just say...

I feel the same way sometimes...especially when Birdseye starts playing.

Welcome back, Temp. I was in the exact same boat. When I decided to check things out again, lo and behold, we're alive!

And no, I don't play the same levels over and over... however, playing in Linux limits the number of levels I can play with other people somewhat. There's still tons out there (about 350MB worth in my folder) so we should definitely get our game on. Whiners can take it somewhere else.

Banned?

Well, tried to get back in the mines, however the "Ol' Farts Club" ....er, forgive me...the "retirement group" or whatever kept saying that I was banned or could not find server.

I am unable to join any of the games. Is this a matter of a locked down IP range? Or is there a secret handshake I was not aware of?

heheh secret handshake. Go shoot a post on the descent server op board to get un banned. http://www.descentforum.net/ServerOps/ everyone is pretty reasonable over there.

If you are banned from all servers as you say ("any"), then there is no doubt that you are caught in a locked down IP range. Voice your complaint and IP address at the Server Ops forum, where the administrator of the Universal Ban Lists will remove the IP range from the List and the ban.

You are sadly not the first person this has happened to, but the third. I am currently petitioning to have the Universal Ban List of IP ranges, primarily last updated around May 2004, to be cleared so this does not happen for a fourth time.

Well uh... does it say "You Are Banned" when you try to join all the games? If not, then it's something else.

No, actually it says "Welcome to the game, have fun playing as there is absolutely no reason why you shouldnt be playing this online game..."

I just made the "banned" part up in a desperate attempt for attention. :?

At least half of those belong to a mere half a dozen members of III. I doubt there are more than a few dozen people who play even weekly at this point.

I can name dozens who play daily...and how would you know anyhow :)

Here's two dozen (NON-III) people I can name off the top of my head, who I see playing daily...and I'm missing lots...

Clayman,

Actually, I was going off of the forums and such as far as involvement in the past 6 months. As I previously noted, I only started playing again about a week ago, and up until that point was gone for about 1.5 years.

And even if someone only pops in monthly, that is still investing some interest in a game that many are claiming as struggling for existence.

My point is, there is still a fair community out there for Descent and based on that, nothing is ever out of the question.

eh, i don't mind starting to play a new map in multi, no matter how pwned i get. XD
