Should I turn on standby mode for my LCD monitor after X mins?

I wouldn't -- most stress for the backlight are power cycles.

on that note, does anyone know of any decent free 3d screensavers, that don't run like crack on speed on high-end hardware?

If I were to use a screen saver on a LCD, it would either be the Windows XP screen saver, or a blank screen. Because odds are I wont be there to see it, and if it shows nothing and does nothing, then the PC is using less power to do it.

I would recommend it, for it would help save life of the white light (back light). In general, it will help to prolong the life of the monitor.
