Hey,
Here is a render of what I have been working on the last few weeks. It's an Eight-Spotted Forester moth. My goal is to make it as realistic as possible.
I will update this post when I make some progress
Comments are apreciated.

I like it quite a bit
The Thorax area (the area with the black ridges) needs some texture to it, and the wings look slightly too much like Cloth with frayed edges. Maybe make the vein-like streaks going through the wings smaller, and more defined (not quite so soft) and perhaps make the patches of color slightly more defined.
But it still looks excellent!

This should be able to pass for realistic.
Try adjusting your lighting. Then adjust your color levels to match how a camera would see the same colors in that light.
You might want to look into this style of lighting...

Thanks for the comments.
Yea this is by no way a final render. I will have to do a better lighting set-up.
The thorax area kinda looks like tire rubber doesn't it?
I have to paint some textures for that area.
I also agree that it kinda looks like cloth on the wings. I struggled quite a bit to make it look kinda chalky and not like cloth. Any other suggestions in this area would be helpful.

I don't know what software you are using, but if it is Maya or Max (I think lightwave has it too) try using Subsurface scattering on the wings.

Thanks for the links. I am using both Max and Maya. I know both pretty well. I think I will try SSS on my model. I might have to render in layers cuzz i'm ruunning into memory problems when rendering so I don't know if I will be able to use SSS without a crash.
I should Have an update in a few days.

Have flying and land on a tiny little version of new york city, that happens to be built on a flower.

Rigging this model up shouldn't be that hard. If I have time I might do a simple animation for my demo reel.
I'm experiencing memory problems while rendering. I can't get those shadows sharper without max crashing on me. Grrrrr

It looks very good.
Off topic: Why do some threads wrap and others don't for me? Is it because of the size of the picture in this post?

Yep. Even at 1290x1024 this page doesn't wrap.

IMHO the hair is too long and the veins on the wings are too thick - looks very promising though

Yea I agree the furr is a bit too long. I fixed up the veins and made them smaller and got a better lighting setup.
Here is a new render
