Can't get to site from address bar

Can't get to site from address bar but can by going through Google search.

Have a friend who can't type an address into his address bar using IE. It gives him an error window to \"Send\" or \"Don't send\"... and then closes the IE window down.

He can however search for the same website on Google and then click on their link and all is well.

He runs XP and has the latest updates.
Security is set on default.
He uses Windows fire wall and AVG.

I had a lady the other day who had the same exact problem. She was trying to get on \"Skyfexfree\" and it wouldn't let her but got there through Google.

What's up?

Ran Ad-Aware and anti-virus. Restored to an earlier date. Updated from Windows updater.

My friend can now type an address in the window and that site comes up but gets the \" IE has encoutered an error and must close down\".

What next?

Stop using stupid IE as a browser. Geez - it aint rocket surgery mate! IE is a piece of crap. It might have been acceptable in 2000 - but times have changed!

Wow, every once in a while, maybe every couple hundred posts, Mobius actually posts something usefull. :P

Seriously, use firefox. You keep using IE, you will end up with the same problem again.

By the way, if you couldn't get to any sites from the address bar, how did you get to google?

I'm working with a guy who knows nothing except to get on the web and/or get his e-mail. I'll use that as the last resort \"cause\" he's not good with change.

Also, I hate to give up that easily.
