Audio, video, text CD

A friend needs help with putting together a CD with Audio, video and text.

Need to do it on the \"cheep\". Do I need special software? I have a digital camcorder and a digital camera.

Well, just keep in mind that you can't burn a CD containing anything but audio and play it in a CD or DVD player. (Well you can but it takes up mucho space.)

That in mind, Windows XP has a built-in CD burning program. Just pop in a blank CD and copy the files to the blank CD drive, then click \"Burn these files to disc\" on the left.

Are you talking about making a CD/DVD that shows a video with text and audio all together? Or a CD that contains some files of each type?

If you just want to have files of each type on the CD (say, to transfer to another computer) you can just burn them all to a CD.

If you want to have a CD that plays audio in a CD player but also has files of a different format, I think you can just create the audio CD (which will have files of .cda format) and then stick some text files at the end, but I might be wrong on this, so double-check before you try it.

If you want to create a CD with a movie on it, where the movie has audio and text overlays, you'll need video editing software.

I think you need to give a clearer description of the project you're working on before I can be of any more help.

Sorry, that you can't do. You can burn a multi-session CD and make the first session the data track and the rest audio tracks, but the audio files won't show up when you open the drive in Explorer, only in programs that are meant to play CD-Audio. Windows cannot burn mutli-session CD's, you'd have to use a program like Nero for that.

Contrary to popular belief, audio CDs do not contain files of ".cda" format. No such format exists; it's an abstraction Windows makes for you when you open up an audio CD in Explorer. If there's a data track on the CD, Windows will ignore the audio tracks and present you the contents of the data track.

You are going to need to provide a bit more info on exactly what you want to do.

That being said, opening Windows Media Player isn't a hard task to do.

Sorry. Here's a little more info.

Maybe we can't do video and stills on the same CD.

He has a church ministry to high school kids and his idea was to make a CD with pics of the different kids in the group and play the CD on a screen while the kids are coming into the church.

It would also have some text that may explain what the groups focus is so the cd could also be used to give others an idea of what the ministry was about.

I've seen things like this used at funerals to showcase someone's life.

Sounds like the presentations that are becoming more popular for weddings, as well. I've run two of them at my church for weddings in the last three weeks.

You can do it with CDs, but it will be difficult to find anything that will play it (except a computer, of course).

If you can edit and burn it to a DVD, in one of the standard DVD formats, it will generally be much easier to set up.

Found out the church has a DVD player and some kind of unit that will project to the screen at the front.

So.....I assume I need a DVD burner and some software so I can show a pic slide show of some kind with music(?).

Does Moviemaker do slides?

thewolfe: WMM doesn't do slides, per se. You can import stills and place them in the timeline, overlaying them with text. Or, what might be easiest, you can make a presentation in PowerPoint and burn that to a CD. You can drop background music into the presentation as an audio clip on the first slide, and it should continue playing for as long as you specify.

Here's another comment I got about Powerpoint. I have Powerpoint and would like to use it if possible. Again I think this comment is about a DVD player.

or, you could hook up your computer to a camcorder, record the presentation, and then dump it onto a dvd, then you'd only have to worry about what kind of recordable dvd that dvd player can play.

laptop sounds easier.

I think a DVD player is more practical for his use.

How about if I cut loose of some money. What software would work to create a slideshow with text and sound if possible?

You could grab the 30-day trial of Macromedia Flash and export your movie as AVI. Then use Windows Movie Maker to burn that to a DVD.
