Network Cards

At work there are a few windows 2000 pro machines that the network card will out of the blue disable themselves. Diffrent nic brands, motherboards, hubs. Any ideas? Do surges make the nics disable themselves?

IIRC some times if there not getting used all the time W2k Xp 2003 shuts them down in to low power mode
but also they could be bad cause my server was doing the same thang and once i replace the card it stop

isnt there a way to disable OS Control of power modes? isnt it in BIOS, a feature usualy reconized as "ACPI Aware OS" or "APM Aware OS"?

i know my Gigabit Intell card lets me control it but not my Linksys gigas

Might be able to control it via Device Manager. Find the network card in there and uncheck the box that lets the computer turn it off to conserve power (cant remember if its there in 2000, but it is in XP).

Correct. Pardon me.
It's in the Device Manager Power management properties. Something like "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power." or something like that. Disable it.

just make sure if you are going into you bios to adjust settings look for something that relates to POWER settings for PCI devices, make sure it's set at S1 not S3.
