Big deal. They're optical illusions. They were done the same way Frodo and Gandalf were filmed at Bag End, because McKellen and Wood are about the same size, yet on film Frodo is about half Gandalf's height. With a meticulous setup the eye can be fooled.

Um, no. Read the snopes article. She's 6' 5.5", but they put her in heels and stood her next to a 5' 1" woman and a 5' 4" man. That's why she looks so fricken tall.
