Fast is good

Fast is getting the latest BSG episode at home, at an average of 3.98 mbps from 26 peers and surging up to 5.66 mbps. I like unconstrained DSL
To date, the fastest I have seen sustained is 6.7 mbps when downloading a chunky PDF file from my ISP.
At work I regularly experience 8.9 mbps on our Telstra fibre optic lines. Pings are unreal on that network, and for our video conferencing it is ideal. Wish I could game on it.
What's your record? Where, and what on?

My record download speed at home? I got a whopping 640 kbit/sec (80 KB/sec). Best ping? Once I was hitting in the 20-30 range to a internet server.

Your D/L speed can only be as good as the server that's pushing it to you.
The fastest was a off a MS server a couple years back when I was grabbing an update. something like 1.3mbps.
*shrug* I don't get fast enough often enough to get excited about it.

I regularly get 1.2 megabytes per second.
thats what, 9.6 mbps in telco marketing speak?

I'm actually genuinely interested in the answers. I didn't want this to be a pissing contest. I really don't give a ★■◆● what you have a connection, what I'm interested in is how your connection has changed over time, and ar ethe speeds still increasing?
You guys will remember (if you are old enough, and have been round here long enough) that I was stuck with crappy dial-up from New Zealand for the longest time, and then I got DSL as soon as it became available, in late 2000. Since then, our national DSL offerings have been limp-a55ed to say the least (stuck at 128/128 for years!). But now Telecom have some competition, and they offer unconstrained DSL - up to 8Mb/s - and from some servers, it actually can get close to that.
I would have thought US DSL connections would already be DSL2 (We get that in 3 months - up to 24Mb/s they reckon, but more likely 18Mb/s) and running at much much faster speeds.

naw. They guys that regulate speeds are paranoid. We're all pretty much capped at around 2 megs +/- and that's down. I think the highest advertised is 4. But, we only get 368 up unless you have a commercial line.
\"the bigboys\" don't want everyone hosting game servers from home or something.
So, mostly our D/L speeds suck because hardly anyone is pusshing more than a meg up.

Oh, you meant on the computer? Sorry...
(this was really for Mobius' benefit because he's the one who tipped me off to the incredible value of the 928 in todays market)
Thanks Mobius, I finally got one!
Lets race, just put yours on a boat and get up here.
Now, all you speedy computer nerds get off the computer and go outside and drive a real car because if you're sitting in your room you are not \"fast\"!

I have had Comcast for 1.5 years now. It started at 4 meg down went to 6 meg if you have cable TV also. I called to find out why it wasn't work one day and told them if it didn't get fixed in the next hour I was switching to FIOS and it was running 5 minutes later at 8 meg down. Upload has stayed at 384k though.
Fasted down dl 900k
fastest torrent 600k down

ooOOoo.. just did a Dsl Report Speed test.
dslreports.com speed test 2006-11-22 21:28:06 EST:
9352 / 356 (Kbps)
(1141.6 / 43.5 KB/sec)
Compared to the average of 4885 tests from comcast.net:
* download is 34% better, upload is 17% worse
I like.
...too bad I never get to d/l anything at that speed.

oh ok, the speed of broadband has been increasingly cheaper down here in OZ.
i'd say that as of late it's been trying to emulate Moore's law - not quite, but i think it's trying.
Coz a few years ago you could maybe get 128Kbit/s internet for $50AUD,
But 18months ago $40AUD would buy 256/64 speed internet with approx 5-10gig/month cap,
but now $40AUD buys 512/128 speed internet with a 10gig/month cap.
I don't notice if the \"cutting edge\" speeds have been going up since i can't afford them, but the prices are definitely steadily comming down - as should be expected i'm sure.
Personally, i'll be happy once i can on-the-fly stream youtube vids - i think that's somewhere slightly over 512kbit/s, so i think i'll upgrade to that and then forget about it. I can't think of any justification to personally pay for more bandwidth than it takes to do that.
edit: oh wait, i do recall Telstra recently announcing they were increasing their speed somehow... i think they are upgrading something or rather in the exchances - we got a call but dismissed it as a marketing call.

I don't have to prove anything to you Wareagle. Just stop your bull★■◆●.
I've already tested my connections with a ton of people on Kali using my FTP. I have the highest sustained transfer rate. My d/ls are what I see from all the major web sites.
The test sites are kinda flawed as it change depending on the time of day you do it at.
Just stop bugging me dude.

I joined the thing. Here are my results.
It Depends on what you use also. I get lower results on some of them.
This site is just for so-so results. WWW sites can not be 100% accurate. I use another program (System Mechanic) to look at down load speed. It has 2 -3 options on what to down load. Is it accurate hell no because it uses a www site too imo. oh well
Todays report from yet another test site:
link
my ISP says we are at 4down and 512 up
Wish I could afford the 9 down and 800 up javascript:emoticon(':D')
Very Happy
