Free cda to mp3 converter

I just bought a Sandisk mp3 player and have some \"cda\" music files on my computer I want to upload to the player.

Looking for a converter.

Just noticed the \"cda\" files are only 44 bytes.

Can't be music files, I guess.

Naturally, CDA \"files\" are just nonsense that windows puts on audio cds, what you really need is a CD ripper and encoder. Winamp can do it, but the free version sucks for it.

The .cda files are just Windows' representation of the tracks on the CD and as far as I know have no particular purpose other than as a plug for the UI (double-clicking on one will open some random CD player application).

What you need is what's called a CD ripper. CDex is a good, easy-to-use ripper. Google it. I don't remember if it comes with an MP3 encoder or not, I use optimized versions of aoTuV's OGG encoder (21-24x encoding on my A64 X2 4200+ with CPU cycles left to spare ).

im guessing these files on the HD, and not a cd, then you can't do anything with them.

The files are IRRELEVANT! They're placeholders! Links that tell Windows CD player where to look! CDex doesn't even touch them, it uses special API calls to get to the data on the CD as directly as possible. CD ripping is an essential function, *of course* there's software that can do it. So just get it and be happy. It even supports CDDB, so your ripped MP3s will be tagged proper (ie, show artist/album/track names on your player). And, as always, Google is your friend.

Of course if all you have is the cda files and not the original CD, you're going nowhere fast even if you have CD ripping software.

Quintissential player has teh best ripping ability I've found. You drop the LAME plugin and go, it does a great job @ 320vbr
