SP2 ?

My Aunt has a Dell Dimm 4400 Pent llll running XP w/ SP1 and would like to upgrade to SP2. However, we have run an \"Intel Proccessor Identification Utility\" and there are some warnings.

Here are her specs from running the utility.

CPU Type - 0
CPU Family - F (Warning for SP2)
CPU Model - 1
CPU Stepping - 2
CPU Revision - 3 (Warning for SP2)

The utility says that with any of the above warnings she could have Stop Errors or Startup failures.

What say you about installing SP2?

Is she having problems with it now?

No? Then don't bother.

So she can get the latest security protection, IE7.....

She's not having any problems.

I have never heard of this \"Intel Processor Identification Utility\" before, and it showing warnings about windows XP SP2 sounds like a crock, SP2 should work just fine on the computer. The processor make and model should have little or nothing to do with XP SP2.

The Intel® Processor Identification Utility is provided by Intel and there is precious little support info provided for it.

The main purpose of the program is to help system integrators to verify that the processor is performing as it should and to guard against imperfect processors or bad hardware settings. It is also intended for use with Intel motherboards, though it may behave alright with other brands.

Chances are likely you can ignore the SP2 \"warnings\"

Meanwhile... be sure you have your anti-virus turned off (or inactive) while installing SP2 and also exit ANY software that is loaded (the less the better). Stuff loaded in the Tray, bells and whistles, pop-up blockers, add-on toolbars, anti-spam, anti-whatever, etc ... MUST BE EXITED before you install SP2... or you invite total disaster.

It's not really SP2's fault, it's just because SP2 makes changes to the system all the way to it's core.

Despite what others may say, I like SP2. It's better than being without it.

I don't install SP2, I slipstream SP2. Since installing it is too much of a pain, takes too long, and hogs up disk space with the uninstaller.

Tried to install. Got about halfway thru and it stopped. Tried twice.

May try the CD in a couple of months.

I think there should be a setting in your BIOS that disables the CPU identification thing. You could try that.

thats for CPU's that have unique Serial Number ID's. thats not for stepping code ID's
