Hey campers. Can anyone link me to a set of instructions for how to network a winXP machine to a win2k machine through a crossover cable? I need to give this instructions to a not terribly technically savvy person (ok,ok ... I need to understand this too
)so they can transfer their iTunes libraries from the win2k laptop to the winXP laptop. Thx.

Piece of cake, both computers should have TCP/IP handy, so just go into the network connections settings, bring up properties on TCP/IP, and manually set computer A to 192.168.1.100, set computer B to 192.168.1.200, both computers should default to 255.255.255.0 subnet. Leave the default gateway, and DNS servers blank. After that, make sure both computers are in the same workgroup and they should be able to see each other. If you need further elaboration, just ask and I'll bust out the images.

Krom: I was under the impression that you had to set the default gateway of each box to the IP address of the other.

Should work w/o. The gateway gets everything that's addressed outside the subnet.

It does work without the default gateway, I've done crossover connections before. You only need the IP and subnet, everything else is for larger networks.

The default gateway is used only for routing packets to another network (e.g. the Internet).
After setting up the connection, try to ping one PC from the other (e.g. \"ping 192.168.0.1\"). If you get a response, the connection works. If you don't, check if...
- ...the physical link works (both PCs show \"Connected\" for the state of the LAN-connection). If they don't, you're probably not using a crossover cable.
- ...the TCP/IP settings are set up correctly.
- ...there is any firewall interfering (including XP's built-in firewall).

Thanks all for the info. I'll be able to take a whack at it in the next couple of days. Will advise if I have any problems.

Hey, thanks to Krom, et. al. for the info. Got 'em renamed, then after a couple of reboots and turning off the firewalls, they were chatting together like a couple of teenagers. Files transferred. Mission accomplished. Merci!
