Office XP Service Pack 3?

What is the criteria for installing the above?

Do you have to have Office XP installed?
What if you have Office 2003?

Office XP SP3 needs Office XP, not Office 2003.

Gotcha. So if the Windows update asks to update, would it have scanned to see that it was needed.

This orig question was for a relative of mine.

I can also find out what his office software is but was curious if Windows would ask to update software he doesn't have.

Windows Update isn't really Windows Update anymore, it is Microsoft Update, so it will work for Office, Windows, Internet Explorer, Media Player, DirectX, and anything else Microsoft wants to update.

Office updates even show up in automatic updates now. And yeah, it only updates software you have installed for obvious reasons. :P

Thanks, that made sense but I wanted to make sure.

How about SP2? I have an Aunt who according to a Intel utility should not upgrade to SP2 although it keeps coming up on her updates.

Screw the stupid intel utility. XP SP2 is a vast improvement and SHOULD be installed on any system that XP is installed on. Otherwise you're leaving her system wide open to an assortment of very public flaws. The only real conflicts with SP2 are with very outdated software (and those are relatively minor to boot). (ie: Office 97)

Yes, and if you bothered to read what you linked, you would note that the solution is to update the bios. Furthermore, if the board in question isn't one of the following then you shouldn't have any issues to begin with. I would install an updated BIOS to be sure though. If you aren't comfortable with doing it yourself, have someone do it for you.
Albatron PX865 PE Pro
Shuttle SB61G2
Jetway i875P
Soyo P4I865P
Aopen AX4SG Max
Asus P4P800-E deluxe
Abit IS7-V
Foxconn 865A01-G-6EKRS
Technically speaking, the problem revolves around the machine's BIOS not installing a production level microcode update. To check whether the BIOS is at the correct level, download the Intel Processor Frequency ID utility. The microcode version is identified by this utility as CPU Revision, which should equal at least 8.

Spooky: With XP SP2 Office 97 WILL install, its just that some things just don't work right or have little quirks. Its an issue with the program code. 2000 and up work just fine. As for vista, its an utter piece of garbage that you couldn't PAY me to use. (and yes, I have run all three betas so fanboys keep the bitching to a minimum)

Of course they want you to buy new stuff. That's simple business economics. (sheeesh)

If you don't want to pay for Office, or don't have enough money that you're willing to part with... Get something that works pretty dang well and is free. Something like OpenOffice that can save your documents in Word's .doc format.

You're right. I really didn't need the \"Sheeesh\" in there... in fact, I had intended to remove it when I reviewed it... but I guess I was bit foggy (really tired) and didn't get that removed. My apologies.
