Been reading through this tutorial and I have some questions:

1. How does he get the grunge/grime texture to work with a paintbrush so that he can paint it on? From what I understand, this is how he did it. Something I could really use.

2. Anyone know how to render/capture and ambient occlusion in blender? This would seriously help to create depth for my textures.

3. What does he mean by \"I made an inverted selection\"?

4. How do you create the actual bump map? I know how to grayscale the images, but not how to bump-map them. I hear it is better to do this in Gimp anyway since the light is much more basic. Anyone know of a good tutorial for bump-mapping and using layers in Gimp?

Gimp just has a filter for normal mapping that you can download. Out of the box, Gimp can do bump mapping, which isn't the same thing.

This tool is based on the nVidia normal map generation tools for Photoshop.

If you understand Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro, Gimp isn't too hard to figure out. Once you install the plug-in, you'll probably find it under Filters -> Map -> Normal Map.
