But at least they come out and vote.
Turnout for the Presidential vote was 84% of eligible voters.
Turnout was huge at 84-85 per cent, possibly matching the record of 84.8 per cent set for a first round in 1965.

And here in North America we are lucky to get what 60%?

I think we get around 64% here. Should be more.

we had 55% in the last US elections. Maybe it's a sign that the French are not as jaded towards their country's politics as we are.

It has less to do with a lot of French voting; the US has an unusually low voting rate. France probably doesn't differ much from the rest of western Europe in terms of voter turnout.

and hopefully they'll elect Sarkozy, and hopefully he'll put through his reform agenda. They need it.

Hey, they are the only people who can make an accordion not totally sound like ass...that's something!

Maybe the reason they turn out more than we do right now has to do with the fact that life there sucks by comparison....If we had their problems you would see increased turnout here. As soon as they get fat, lazy and happy like us they'll stay home too.

And they make fantastic pastries. You gotta give them that too, Will.

It's really unfortunate that the US voting rate it as low as it is. Especially in the last Presidential election, where one would think that dueling ideologies would have caused a heightened level of voting, 55% seems pitifully low.

Sometimes I wonder if voting wouldn't improve if "Neither" was an option in polls. :P

People are disgruntled because we are locked in a two-party system, the very thing George Washington warned us about. People dont bother to vote because they know that no matter what they do its just more of the same. And it always is. People are locked in a Democrat/Republican mindset and never give an independant a second thought. Break this train of thought, and suddently you will see a higher turnout.

all 5 couldn't suck as terribly the same.. could they? each getting a 20% suckage ration; where here, we have a 50%. That's a MUCH bigger change of going from sucky to \"yur scrood\".

Every party that we can vote for suck. They all promise stuff and break it the day they get elected. Everyone steals and gives contracts to people they know and the price is bloated.

Good one... but the suckage is more than enough for all. Generally exceeding 100% each candidate.

if the US didn't go to the poles every 2 years like clockwork you'd get a higher turnout.

We haven't annexed anyone since Hawaii, might be the only one we took in fact, and no where near as many as our European cousins so is it just the fear that we could that makes us suck?
Or was annexing Hawaii so much more egregious than taking, oh...I don't know, say... most of Africa and Asia and gobbling up dozens of countries in eastern Europe?

I wonder if we have arrived at the point where an American pointing this out qualifies as "hate"?

I think the biggest reason we have so little voter turn out is most people just don't care. To me, whoever gets voted in, will lie, steal and cheat to suit there needs.

I've watched debates on TV, read papers etc and they all promise stuff. Then the moment they are elected, they are a different person. So, they lie to you from day 1. Hence why in the 19 years I've been able to vote, I've done it about 5 times.

Doesn't matter who wins anymore, it's always the lesser of two evils and they always screw up our Country in the process.

I for one think Canada needs to stop electing French Prime Ministers.

No, it's the obsession with annexing Canada that makes the US suck. Jealous or something, hmm? :)

Here's some trivia:

In Belgium, not only you have a right to vote, you have an obligation to vote. If you don't show up, you are prosecuted. So we have a 100% turn up ;)

Hmm, I didn't know we had an obsession with annexing Canada. We do joke about it but I doubt seriously that anyone here really thinks we should try to do something like that. And "jealous"... I don't follow that line at all.

LOL....obsessed with annexing Canada. It was just a funny. Besides, why would we want to annex Canada? I mean, we would need a REALLY good reason like say..... shoring up our borders to reduce the amount of terrorists or illegals that are getting into our country or reducing the cost of our ever growing fuel needs. We never worry about these things so it's just not an issue..... errrr wait a minute. :P

And Merlin I think your avatar is missing something at the end like..(by being annexed by the US).
