How hard it be to ask me for my d2 directory and then grab what files you need automatically?
Obviously I am clueless.
I bet someone out that can slap something together pertty quick

It would be a trivial job, but no one has bothered to do it.

a shame because I don't have the time to find an application to extract a file. Where's SuperSheep when you need him

Shame on me - since I currently hadn't the time to make installers (busy with developing the application itself).
But I guess I'll spend some time for these lazy-user-helpers in the final/stable releases.

lol, man I am sorry but I like what I saw everything worked ok without the SOW file, then I tried doing something with the config

SOW file? Hahaaa... that's long ago. The installation archives from Descent
1 and 2...
I remember that these archives could be unpacked using ARJ.
Anyway, for DXX-Rebirth installation it would be enough to ask for the D1/D2
directories (after looking in some default locations perhaps) and then either
copy the DXX-Rebirth files over to it or copy over the .HOG, .PIG, and user
(demo, pilot, savegame, mission) files from it to a new directory, together
with the DXX-Rebirth files.

try to awake old topic, ok? :]
why not just to use winrar-sfx-interactive-script?

I already had the topic covered in my forum why I prefer ZIP instead of RAR. But even a self-extracting ZIP file would not help to install the data files (as far as I know those thingies).
Self extracting would just replace right-click -> extract to with a dialog.
Also I (may not be for everyone) prefer havin the choice how to install it:
* Install over existing D1/2 installation
or
* Just extracting the Rebirth archive and copy the necessary files (cleaner).
When we come to a later version I will consider an installer, however.

you would need an actual installer. D1 is only 15 meg. you don't NEED an installer.
or use the DOS installer.. the README file.

Well, you could store a comment in the archive with instructions. Also, it would help greatly when you make those archives, that you have JUST the files, and not a folder with the files in them. This would greatly reduce any confusion. (You would be suprised how many people have made that mistake that have bitched and moaned on kali.)

Good idea.
In general: Every suggestion to improve my docs is welcome - I know I'm not a good writer.
