What software will run DOS games in Windows XP?

I can't get games like Raptor: Call of shadows, Cyber Empires, The Summoning, Xargon, Highway Hunter, and a bunch of other games to work right in Windows XP. If the game does run I lose sound FX and music. Some one told me two years ago I can download something that will allow me to run DOS games in XP with no problems. Any suggestions.

Do a google search for dosbox. It does a reasonably good job of emulating DOS, but don't expect it to run D1 or D2 decently. Its just fine for older games though.

I thought D1 and D2 were "older games"...

DOSBox is OK but it's dead slow though. And, as near as I can tell, it won't run Raptor reliably making VDMSound probably your best bet there (XP also has basic sound emulation built in as well). In an ideal world you'd be able to go to Mountain King Studios (the new name for Raptors original devlopers) and download either Win32 or Linux native versions of the core engine code and simply use your DOS data files but their licencing agreement with Apogee/3DRealms forbids that apparently.

theres a program called something like VMware i think.
it allows you to run multiple PCs on your one pc (complete with emulated bios, hdd, fdd, everything!)
this program is so powerful you can even run multiple operating systems, in seperate windows on the same screen all @ once.
edit: yeah here we are
http://www.vmware.com/
it's not free, but can be previewed on the kazaa channel.

Connectix Virtual PC works better for DOS games I've found but that's not exactly free either...
