help - need direction

I'm working on an estimate for the cost of software and hardware needed.

-Right now im trying to figure out if i should use a tablet pc as a video wacom tablet.-

The problem is there are very few i've tried, and those tested aren't worth the cost. (fujitsu was the best and still had stylus lag and bad features).
i've called several computer stores who promise that there is no lag when sketching with a stylus on their tablets. When i came to test for my self, it turns out they had just humored me to come by the store. Where can i go to try tablet convertible laptops?

What i haven’t seen are Toshiba tablets, Lenovo x60's, and a high end fujitsu. Asus

The one's i have tried too many of are the worthless HP/Compaq tablets that aren’t worth the plastic they're made of. The samsung q1 ultra was very cool, but more of a toy.

I've called stores. Who do i call next? Tech support shops in my area claim the see about 1 per year come in.
the big need is: no lag in the stylus. It needs to be 100% responsive as a desktop mouse.

You guys could really help if you knew my next move.

I have a Lenovo X60 and it's sweet as heck. No lag whatsoever in GIMP ((what program are you using, by the way?) and when you're not using it in tablet mode, it's got a nice TrackPoint to move the cursor in place of the fingerpad.

I don't know where you could try one, though.

oooo!! I've got more questions for you. But I'm so glad to hear an artists talk about a tablet as a good artitsic tool.

1. do you hold it like a regular sketch book?
2. Is it built strong enough to be in my gym bag all the time or should i leave it at home? (i'm a bus user)
3. Do you use the standard batery? Are you happy with it?
4. How's the battery life in tablet mode?
5. When using the tablet, dose the edge of the screen bother your hand like writing on the spine of a spiral notebook?
6. Did you try others before buying the x60? Where did you try it? Did the others compare to be almost just as good?

Photoshop, mudbox. Maybe illustrator and flash... if there's a need.
Small list, but tons of work will be done in these.

What about the mousepad-based stylus things? I have no idea what they are called, but I remember using them way back, and I imagine they are still around...

The those tablets work. but you see what i want is to see what im drawing on. Wacom makes a video tablet that you plug into your computer but im not sure if it's worth all the money.

I really appreciate it, but it looks those who might know the answer to my problem arn't checking this thread out. Maybe my title wasn't grabbing enough.

diff topic if i may...

Actually i've noticed lots of my thread kinda get passed up on this forum. It's mostlikly due to personality differences, which is fine. I think i'll just find a forum i have a better connection with... maybe an anime/3danimator/classic games forums. ;p

Good by all of you who have been reading my threads! You guys kept me on and made me have fun! Have a good life.

i use a Tosbiba Tecra A7, i mainly use it just as a desktop laptop with a mouse/speakers plugged in - it's my main and only machine.

In tablet mode it plays an AWESOME game of XCOM 1.

i doodle on it on occasion too - All the stuff on my DA account that you're subscribed to is prettymuch the first stuff i ever drew on it. I don't draw on it much, i should draw more, that's why i bought it. Bug me about it pls.

i don't notice any lag. But coz i was curious about what you were saying - i whipped the stylus around really fast on the screen. There is no noticable TIME lag - but because computers arn't instant there is obviously a lag of at least a few ms. It means the cursor isn't always hidden under my stylus point, but it's no \"lag\" like what you are asking. It's as instant as drawing on paper - and my style is generally with huge overexaggerated fast lines so i'd be able to tell if there were lag.

battery lasts 3 hours max - generally around 2.
\"Tablet mode\" is simply re-orienting the screen and turning off the keyboard - it doesn't change anything - the stylus works on the screen even in non-tablet mode. So there's no change in battery life. I'm happy enough with it, but i've never had a laptop before so i'm easy pleased.
(ps: it has a space for an extra clipon battery that sits flush with the laptop)

I wouldn't keep it in my gym bag, the screen pivot seems very delicate. But lug it around a bus in included padded laptop bag? sure thing.

it's hot it's heavy and i'm a weakling, when i draw i'm generally laid back in a chair, feet up, with the tablet balanced on my knee or thigh.

i never tried anything in stores, but i did a lot of research on the interbutt before i bought it to make sure i could game well enough on it.

edit: on my DA account that \"fly fly speed\" one was kinda a test of how fast i could draw on the tablet - it seems it's only limited by the speed of the hand.
