Looking for replacement for lost web space

My ISP (**cough**hack**embarq**gag**cough**) decided to \"upgrade\" my service and cancelled my newgroups and free web space. I have the newsgroups covered but I would like some recommendations for a free internet hard drive that others can download files from. I don't need a lot of storage. 1 gig would be fine. I want a reliable service that does not spam my email after I sign up.
Thanks

Did you know that for about $6 USD per month you can get up to 300 GB of storage with 3,000 GB of monthly transfer plus your own domain name if you go to a professional hosting company?
It isn't free, but it is massively more flexible than the flat HTTP only \"hosting\" that most ISPs offer.

Actually I have a friend in that business but I didn't want to bother him with small stuff. I'll need his help when I start my own dot com (which hopefully won't be too much longer).
I am looking for something just to hold images and other files to share with others. Like the desktop screen shots.

For images I use imageshack.us, free, lets you upload unlimited images, and works with the least hassle. Useless for generic files though. You could just ask your friend if he could spare 1 GB of his hosting package for you, because most hosts provide the control panel which lets someone set up multiple users with their own disk and bandwidth quotas. You would be limited to a sub-domain, but it should work fine for what you want.

This sounds kind of funny but I don't want to use up my favors with him now. I am going to need a lot of help getting my business started.
Is there any free service that does the same thing as image shack that handles any type of file?

There might be, but I would imagine it would be quite hard to find one that is easy to use and doesn't annoy the heck out of you with ads or other mindless add on crap.
If the files are small and you have a spare low power computer you could run all the time, you could set up a free dyndns account and run an apache web server of your own, host them right out of your house on your own internet connection. For low traffic stuff most home DSL/Cable connections should be up to the challenge, I use my own connection at home to host a HTTP/FTP server for sending small files around quickly (krom.d3k.org). I only use my professional host (krom.sploitz.com) for much larger stuff, or things that are likely to require more bandwidth than my home DSL can provide reliably. Although you would have to check your service contracts, most ISPs don't mind if you run a low traffic server out of your house, but a small number might take exception to it.

Google has their own hosting, it's free if you own a domain name.

This also has potential ass kicking:

Of course, share only with trusted folks.

Thanks for the replies. It looks like it is going to be more painful then I thought
