I've tried all at once, one at a time, turned of firewall, what next?

What is the exact error?

Error message was.....\"Some updates were not installed\". I only tried one that time.

remember that when you run repair, it resets your registry. So while those updates are indeed on your system somewhere, Windows has no clue as to where they're at.

I tried the fix from MS Support and didn't work so I tried the following and it solved the problem.

Step 1. Open Notepad (or any text editor).

Step 2. Copy and paste the following command lines into the Notepad window (the /s switch runs the commands silently, freeing you from having to press Enter after each line):

regsvr32 /s wuapi.dll
regsvr32 /s wuaueng1.dll
regsvr32 /s wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 /s wucltui.dll
regsvr32 /s wups2.dll
regsvr32 /s wups.dll
regsvr32 /s wuweb.dll

Step 3. Save the file to your desktop, using a .bat or .cmd extension.

Step 4. Double-click the icon of the .bat or .cmd file.

Step 5. A command window will open, run the commands, and then close.

If you are using AutoUpdate, axe this folder and sub folders. A few files may be locked but that's OK. Windows will rebuild the folder on your next Auto-update/Windows Update.

It also deletes all the windows system files and reloads them off the CD, so those updates actually are gone.

Also if you attempt a repair AFTER IE 7 has been installed... the repair will either fail... or corrupt the system. Revert to IE6 before you repair off the XP CD.

Usually it just disables IE completely, and you have to trigger the IE7 uninstall from the recovery console before you can use IE again. Which to some people might be a feature not a bug.

Good info on IE 7 cause I didn't have it until I \"repaired\" and plan to do some more tweaking so I may have to do this all over again but now I have the ammo.
