Suggestions for programs for UVmapping

Okay, for the past couple of years I've always wanted to make my own models, and maybe even texture them with simple patterns, or what have you, but all of the programs that I've tried, 3ds Max, Blender, Milkshape, Wings3d haven't gotten it done for me. To be honest, I didn't stick with them very long... not even long enough to get to that part of learning I suppose (*smacks himself with a stick*). But for those that are experianced, which one of those programs (or maybe others, preferably free) has the gentelest learning curve? I'm sure that none are stupid simple, but which one would you guys reccomend.

Truespace was pretty easy when I used it, but didn't have much power either... could be what you're looking for though.

I do have Truespace 3.2, I used to have it many years ago, back when all I was making was stupid things from the primatives. Do you know of any tutorials that worked for you? As in ones that you liked so I don't have to sift through loads of tutorials that may not be worth looking at.

Why? Whats wrong with... my girlfriend... selling her... fingernail clippings... to... an industrial plant in russia... that is trying to produce the first... "nail" gun... and her buying me a copy with her royalty fees? :D

I would suggest Blender. It has improved a LOT and it is free. :D

Takes a lot of work to get the hang of it though.
