My friend send me a picture and story this:

this is a dangerous habit, I must confess that I had sub-consciously

Never, ever answer a cell phone while it is being RECHARGED!!

A few days ago, a person was recharging his cell phone at home. Just at
that time a call Came in and he answered it with the instrument still
connected to the outlet. After a few seconds electricity flowed into the
cell phone unrestrained and the young man was thrown to the ground with
a
heavy thud. His parents rushed to the room only to find him unconscious,

with a weak heartbeat and burnt fingers. He was rushed to the nearby
hospital, but was pronounced dead on arrival. Cell phones are a very
useful modern invention. However, we must be aware that it can also be
an instrument! of death.

Never use the cell phone while it is hooked to the electrical outlet!

looks like a lithium ion battery short circuit to me. Remember the exploding Dell laptops? Same battery technology.
I remember some military guy here saying that when their lithium ion batterys take a hard knock - as a precaution they leave them outside for a while to see if they start to catch fire.

What happens with lithium ion batterys, is when they get a big knock the electrodes inside can short out to one another. This causes a cascade reaction inside the battery and it very quickly dumps ALL of it's energy and the thing melts, catches on fire, and can even explode. Lithium ion batterys are not designed to discharge so quickly, they actually have special electronics that accompany their chargers etc that prevent this. This is why you can't buy lithium ion AA batterys, Lith-ions are always integrated into the systems they power - so they can integrate the special charging/discharging protection electronics into the device itself. If they didn't do this, lith-ions would be exploding all the time and ppl would be being seriously hurt. It can be a very violent reaction.


It'll all be fixed soon though, there's a new tweak to lithium ion battery technolgy that replaces the internal graphite electrodes with a nanotechnology substitute that can handle any speed of charging/discharging.
The new batterys can charge or discharge incredibly fast, in just 10 minutes. These batterys are being put into electric cars, you can \"fill up\" these cars in a few minutes - similar to filling a gasoline tank.

Oh, and they no longer short out and explode. The new ones are very very safe:

A case in point. The Killacycle is an electric dragster motorbike (you may have seen it on youtube), it uses some of the new lith-ion nanotech batterys by A123 (that's how it goes so fast - the very fast discharge times). A few weeks ago it had a mild crash and some of it's batterys were damaged. If they were the old type of batterys they might have well destoryed the entire bike and even killed the rider! But coz they were the new nanotech batterys, nothing exploded or caught fire.

JP, they're trying to point out that the "dangers of cell phones exploding while charging" is a myth! It's another urban legend like the ones about contact lenses fusing to your eyes, or missiles locking onto police radar guns.

Yes, right. Real story, my best friend got an eMail from his friend. Then my best friend send it to me.

If a friend sends you something another friend sent him, 9 times out of 10 its not true.

Think a bit more critically about the stuff you get in your inbox, especially if its from your friends.

I use L-ions in my model airplane, and have been warned similarly. If you crash a model plane with a L-ion battery, leave the battery out on a concrete slab overnight, in case it burns.

The biggest problem is that they burn very hot, and since the reaction is powered by the power in the cell, you can't starve it out, and you can't put it out by dumping water on it b/c it just further shorts the thing out. The best thing you can do is be prepared, and if you drop the battery, put it somewhere where it won't do any damage if it burns. I've also heard that it can take a while to happen- so don't assume that it's fine after 5 minutes- leave it in a safe place for 12 hours or so. All of this is especially true if you see any visible damage to the battery. If you can see damage, replace it immediately, and dispose of the old battery properly.

Snoopy: I believe what you're referring to is LiPo or lithium polymer. Lithium ions are cylindrical in shape.

If LiPos are involved in a crash you are supposed to set them aside and keep an eye on them for 24 hrs, preferably while they're inside a Liposack. The only way to minimize a lipo fire is to dump a bunch of sand on them.

LiPo is Lithium-Ion-Polymer. Prettymuch same tech no? Same electrodes anyway - I bet they both go boom.

You posted a fake email that a friend sent to you and you got a little ribbing for it.
You aren't the first one to have done it and you will not be the last one for sure.

The ribbing you got here was by far very mild compared to what you would have got at most forums I visit. I thought the Dbb peeps were being suprisingly gentle with you about it.

If you will read the original post, it says something about the charger being plugged in, and electricity flowing in unrestrained... my guess is that the charger failed, shorted, (whatever) allowing 110V to be applied to the phone. That certainly could have caused the damage described.

if that happened, the mains breaker would trip.
