mouse upgrade

After reading JMeat's thread on the Habu mouse, I'm thinking of getting one. I've been using a logitech Mx300 for a couple of years now (I even have a spare for when this one dies)...mainly because of the small size. It seems very accurate and fast, though I have nothing to compare it to.

Is there really that much of a difference with the newer gaming mice? I dont find that I need more buttons, though the dpi up/down buttons are exactly what I use on my current mouse for back page in IExplorer...
Those dpi up/down buttons can be switched to other functions, right? I cant imagine needing to change sensitivity during a game.

most mouse mice are all software controlled now so sensitivity doesn't differ greatly from brand to brand. It's more about how it feels in your hand and what kinda button config you like. I posted on this a while back and i was really surprised and the wide range of likes and dislikes on this board there is when it comes to mouse aesthetics.

I am very happy with my Logitech mice. I have a MX1000 that is great for using in windows since it is effectively a 10 button mouse and the setpoint software lets me assign almost any function to any button. I also have a G7 which I use mainly for gaming since it is very accurate and about as responsive as a mouse can get.

i have a MX518 simply because I like the button lay out. I almost bough Siatek's new gaming mouse GM3200 as I have large hands like a heavier mouse. Krom, on the other hand likes lighter mice. (electronic and otherwise i assume

).

For gaming though, I have heard no end to the raving of the Razor mice. I don't care for them for several reasons, but those are personal preference. They are a good product. .. but they still suck. ;D

Yeah, you would notice a difference once you have your games tuned to the right sensitivity at the highest DPI setting.

Umm, no its not.

Optical != laser.

Its just an LED. Logitech didn't use lasers until the MX1000. (which I still use btw!)

I think I'm going to go ahead and get the Habu...everything I've read seems to indicate its a great mouse (seems there are some s/w issues with the installation in some of the reviews), and I like the feel of it.

I noticed that there are 4000dpi gaming mice, and the habu is 2000dpi. I have no idea how one is different from another...is there a great difference?

I love this mouse. I have an MX300 and it feels similar. The Habu is a right handed jobie though.

The side buttons are removable and swappable with another set of buttons that the mouse comes with depending if you are a palmer or a fingerer to move.

I have to keep the DPI on the lowest setting in Windows, upping the DPI makes the mouse SUPER sensitive. I have yet to mess with it in gaming. I beat BioShock with the mouse on the normal low DPI and it was great.

You can assign the buttons to most windows shell funcions. (Except Maximize

)

I finally got this mouse (had to wait cause it was backordered).

Wow! This has such a...solid feel to it! The mouse is REALLY comfortable.

I have a couple of quick questions:
What does polling rate do? (I can choose between 125Hz/500Hz/1000Hz) and how will it affect gaming?

Is the advantage of higher Dpi that it is quicker (which makes the mouse cursor more squirley), whereas lower Dpi is more accurate?

There is a sensitivity setting, which confuses me, since that is basically what the Dpi setting is...right?

Leave the sensitivity setting in windows alone (in the middle of the slider), set the driver sensitivity setting to maximum. Turn the polling rate to 500 Hz (1000 is overkill) and the DPI to maximum, then use the in-game sensitivity adjustments to set the mouse to a comfortable speed. This will get you the maximum accuracy at whatever sensitivity you prefer. If you use the mouse in windows, it will be way too fast at the highest DPI so use the on the fly DPI adjustments to toggle the mouse down to a speed you can use it in windows comfortably as well.

Polling rate is how often the mouse updates the computer on its position.
DPI is how accurately the mouse reads the surface.
Sensitivity/acceleration is a software trick that multiplies or divides how much the cursor moves for each unit of movement from the mouse.

Raising the polling rate reduces input lag.
Increasing the DPI increases the responsiveness, speed and accuracy of a mouse.
Changing the sensitivity artificially accelerates the mouse cursor impacting accuracy, so for instance at 2.0 sensitivity in windows every input the mouse makes is multiplied by 2 in the driver.

I've got the settings on 500 Polling rate, and 2000 DPI. There's actually a sensitivity option in the Habu controlls that allows this to be adjusted...so I turned the sensitivity down a bit and now, I've fine tuned it so that it's just right...in games and in windows, without having to change anything.

Grats on the new mouse RM. I actually removed the Habu driver/software and let Windows discover it as a Standard HID compliant USB mouse because I spent so much time mucking with the sensitivity.

Still no maximize though!

JMeat, I thought of doing that after a few hours messing with the mouse, but the sensitivity setting fixed all issues for me.
