Is there anyway to play multiplayer Descent 3 online? I have tried IP searching and things and only direct LAN connections seem to work, is that right?

Sorry, no. Since the PXO service is no longer around, the CX tracker (and the others) only track dedicated servers which are set up for them.

If you have someone specific you want to play, you can give them your IP, and start the game on your machine. Then they can manually input your IP to join.

If you're wanting to join a game and wait for others to see it on the trackers, your best bet is to post here or on the ServerOps Forum, and ask a server-op to set up the game for you. Most of the serverops here are always willing to help, especially someone new to the game.
