If you want it to be something remotely approaching fair try holding a 16 player anarchy for 10-15 minutes. Put the highest scoring player with lowest scoring player, second highest scoring player goes with second lowest scoring player, etc.

Although in the end that will boil down to a contest of who can smoke the other teams noob faster, but the alternative of letting people pick their own partner will likely result in one obvious super team that nobody else could defeat.

Hmm...
6 one way...and 1/2 x a dozen the other...

I think it should be a 1v1 tourney with the results as seeding, not an anarchy. Some people do better in 1v1 than in anarchy. And 1v1 is more similar to 2v2 than anarchy is.

The problem with holding a 10-15 minute anarchy to establish the seeding is that there may be players who purposefully 'bomb' the match to get a higher-seeded teammate.

Well holding a 1v1 tournament to decide the teams would take far too long to be practical, and people could still bomb that to get a better shot at a good team mate. Not to mention 1v1 is nothing like 2v2 which really does have more in common with anarchy.

You could do something like this I suppose, assuming you had 8 pairs for 16 players total, the top 8 players in the game can pick anyone from the bottom 8 they want, starting with the #1 player. Or you could have it so the best player from the top 8 gets the best player from the bottom 8. Either method gives them incentive to play their best in the anarchy round. Although the players closer to the middle could still try to bomb it for the chance of getting picked by one of the better players/etc.

would anyone be objective to not allowing teammates to have the same ship? just a thought

Shiat. All of this is too complicated. Just make it random and break up the Behe/DT team if it arises.

Z I posted in other thread about that

Since when is a tourney about making everything even? Are you all going to hold a session at the end to console each other and share your feelings? :P

There's no point in trying for a Tourney if you know that there's not a chance in heck of winning becuase you need to smash against a brick wall ...

As I mentioned on .com, and Money! said above, make it random, but reserve the right to break up any clearly-too-powerful teams. That worked for me in a couple of 2v2 tourneys I ran last year.

The reason I suggested it should be made somewhat even is because totally stacked tournaments are boring. Would you watch sports on TV if it was totally obvious from the start of the season which team would win?

I'll have you know that I was a decent phoenix pilot in my time!!! ;)

I know you're right, Krom, I'm just kidding around.

Actually I'm interested in some of the ideas you guys have. I'm taking some notes for a tournament area in a website I've got on the back-burner.

Just to toss out an idea I had... Might be a little complicated to work out at first, compared to some of the ideas on the table, but what about a limited ship choice for teams that might be considered too strong? In order:
Magnum-AHT,
Black Pyro,
Pyro-GL,
Phoenix

For instance, DT and Behemoth would both be flying phoenix.

Of course the strength of the ships might be subject to some debate. And who wants to be forced to fly a phoenix? ;) Just a thought.

I'd play that, my Black Pyro team will pwn!

There are some players out there who fly better in the Phoenix than in any other ship, because of their style.

So trying to enforce a handicap by forcing them to fly a certain ship may not be effective.

I'd say if there ends up being a Behemoth/DarkTalyn-type team, just break them up.

Let the TD determine the teams based on what he thinks will be the most competitive.

There's not going to be an exact science to it, we just want something that is reasonably fair to all contestants and helps prevent games from being total blowouts.

Reasonably fair works fine, i think if we get 4 ringers they should be paired with 4 trainees so to speak.

even though the possibility of player hunting is apparent (as krom mentioned earlier), the TEAMS should use their own discretion on how to combat that.

for instance, if i get some brand new player, i'm not just gonna let the other team bully him, i'd be sticking next to him to conserve our eff.

Yes. I've watched the Patriots all year. And I'm sure they'll be winning on Sunday. I'll be there, watching that too.

Seriously though, it isn't even that big of a deal. Zero should just break up any unfair teams. I think we all know we're in this for fun; we know it's okay to lose (unless your behemoth).

d3jake is one of the youngest, but he's gotten pretty good. He was regularly beating me in 1v1s for a while last year.

I'd also second tournament administrators deciding the pairs, it wouldn't be any worse than the alternatives. :P

I want a hellion for my teammate, and I'll be fine.
