Not only is google a repository of public information, they are now making a move towards private information as well. Given their technological profile, it is almost impossible for them to resist using statistical information drawn from email subscribers elsewhere. This may be a good way to identify spam (much like hotmail does) but there's not much in it for Google if all they can do is let people search their own emails. The power of their technology is the amount of data it can handle, so if they let people search their individual messages like they let people search the net, it's hardly brings any value to Google. I'm looking forward to reading the service agreement and the disclaimers of this service.
This said, I'm rather interested in this business because next year I will be making my thesis for master in computer science on the subject of next-generation search engines. It will include research and proof-of-concept of new searching techniques which, if they work and are scalable, will put Google out of business
