What would cause Outlook to reset a user's e-mail account settings back to default every time their machine is rebooted?

I'm suspecting possibly an e-mail scanner might cause this?

Without spending a whole lot of time...

Problems like that that I've encountered sometimes have to do with access rights and the registry, where settings are often stored.

If the user doesn't have sufficient rights to write to the registry, what usually happens is that the settings appear to take affect in the program they're running, but never really get stored away. The next time they run the program, they end up going back to the old settings.

Of course, that would mean that just stopping and rerunning the program would probably reflect the errant behaviour, and it wouldn't really required a reboot to see.

You might want to try looking around in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\\Software\\Microsoft\\Office to find active settings for Outlook. Then try to make a change and see if it really shows up in the registry.

Unless the user is using advanced features of Outlook like scheduling or this is a corporate machine thats imaged, I would suggest to the user that they switch to Thunderbird immediately.

If the system has a \"settings cleaner\" or something that cleans up your internet usage and \"footprint\" ... that'll cause Outlook to lose it's settings each and everytime the software \"cleans up\" the user's internet usage.

If using that kind of software, make sure it leaves the Outlook stuff alone.

There are other things that could cause this to happen, but that's a start.

Oh ... do you have Admin level access on the computer? If your access is low (such as User level only, not even \"Power User) that could be the reason Outlook isn't saving your settings.
