Increase my remote range?

My universal remote sucks at long distances. Can I put a magnifying glass in front of it to make its range further?

Can I do something else to make it work?

Get a infrared remote relay, they are extremely simple devices but get the job done.

I'm looking for something that would get the signal through 2 layers of tempered glass and across 80 feet of carpeted floor, something inexpensive ($3) and easy to do in a matter of minutes.

Yeah, a proper infrared remote relay can even work through solid walls and doors since they are usually used to hide the actual devices in a cabinet or closet somewhere while still letting you use the remotes. Just get one with a wire long enough to reach to within a reasonable range of the device you want to control.

Well, I'm trying to annoy our cruddy librarian by turning up the TV from out in the hall during lunch. I might not be able to plant a relay, although I will look into one for other uses :)

For something silly like that, a really cheap wireless relay or two in daisy chain will probably work and be sufficiently easy to conceal. :P
