CAIRO, Egypt — Muslim extremist women are challenging Al Qaeda's refusal to include — or at least acknowledge — women in its ranks, in an emotional debate that gives rare insight into the gender conflicts lurking beneath one of the strictest strains of Islam.

In response to a female questioner, Al Qaeda No. 2 leader Ayman Al-Zawahiri said in April that the terrorist group does not have women. A woman's role, he said on the Internet audio recording, is limited to caring for the homes and children of Al Qaeda fighters.

I first heard of it on the History Channel.

How is that provocative, Thorne? That's been pretty much their stance for a few hundred years. Women can't drive, vote, be seen, etc., under Sharia.

What confuses me is how these women were able to protest this in the first place. How'd they get out of the kitchen? Why weren't they killed for speaking agaisnt a man? They are killed routinely for far less.

They're either terrorists themselves or simple people persuaded to believe in the cause. BTW The wife of a terrorist is held in higher esteem than an ordinary Muslim women so it's understandable that the women in the link weren't beaten...

I vote if you use the words conservative or liberal in the same sentence as agenda, or any social group often related to the first words (ex: gay, religious right, etc), then you should automatically lose the argument
