Just bought a new computer and MS is asking to install SP3. Is it ok. What say you?

I'd say yes. The only problems I've heard were if you had an AMD system using Intel Power management.
My fiance has an AMD 3700+ with SP3 and no probs and I have 2 systems, an Intel C2D E6600 and an Intel C2D T5500 also with no issues.
Overall, SP3 was just an update roll up. If you do have any problems there is an SP3 Uninstall option that appears in add/remove programs.

I haven't had any issues with it. Not many changes if you have all the latest updates.

The question still remains…what if you don’t? (patch)

You don't lose but you also don't gain.

Yes, you don't lose.
But ... you might actually a little (though it might be very little). For example, One of my systems is an XP Home system that was always turning off showing the address bar in the folder windows. Didn't matter what you did, next time you opened some folder windows the address bar would be turned off. Then when I installed SP3, the address bar stays on like it should. ... yeah, I know. Big deal.
Also, seems to be substantially more stable. Otherwise, no difference. All the other systems I've put SP3 on have shown very little difference except stability. Remote Desktop function is a little different, but it's only cosmetic.

I've noted only a few differences from SP2 to SP3. My system was perfectly stable and fast running SP2 and that hasn't changed in SP3.

My system is super stable now, so will I be able to apply security patches and stuff in the future if I don’t patch?

If downloading from the MS site.
I noticed this about 3 weeks ago.
It seems once all the updates to SP2 have been completed.
The site will tell you to update to SP3 before you are able to check for any other updates.
Anyways, I updated 2 days ago. All is well.
