Saving B&W Image as Selection

So, because I cheaped out forever ago and got Photoshop elements, I cannot directly edit the Alpha layer, I have to select stuff and click \"Save Selection as\" or something. Well, to save room I plan to use the Alpha for the specular map on many images (except of couse for ones I need transparency). I have a greyscale texture I wanna save as alpha, so I either need to save this directly as an alpha, or have it so it feathers depending on the color (as in 50% opague for 127x127x127 RGB, 25& transparency for 187x187x187 RGB, etc). Anyone know a solution to teh problem?

elements doesn't let you create channels?
