Car exhaust question... Ricers need not view.

Post by Sting_Ray »

Sup guys, I'm in the market for a new cat-back system on my Supersport camaro, but I just don't really know what to go for. I'm looking for quiet when I'm not getting on it, but moderately loud and aggressive when I do. I'm thinking about Borla because every other V8 camaro out there has Flowmasters... trying to be "unique". I'm just wondering what else is out there that would make a nice touch to my machine. Any suggestions would be great.

Thanks.

Sting you should try dynomax ultra flos, they are quieter than flowmasters, but very mean at WOT. I have had several compliments over flowmasters with them.

Save the money and have a good muffler shop build the exhaust for you. A good shop will have a mandrel bender and can easily copy any design. You're paying for the name and the stainless pipe, it's a waste of money. They'll build it for half(or less)the price too.

Yep, the custom pipe I had made for my RX-7 is a real killer. Although a tad loud at low revs. Gives me a huge increase in torque higher up the rev-range: hit 5K RPM and it goes crazy! :)

Unfortunately, shawn, I already got 3 inch tube all the way to the back, and I can't run dual due to space constraints. I won't see any power gains unless I eliminate the ODB2 (or whatever) cat and install headers. I'm just looking for sound... I like the SS sound right now, but it just sounds stock. Speaking of which, it's 10pm and my tops are still down.. thanks for the input.

My Dad always talks about how good metalpack mufflers sound (as opposed to glasspack), said he had them on a Jaguar he owned when he was in the Navy. You might have to have one made though, I don't know if anyone makes them.

What year is your car? I might suggest SLP Engineering(www.slponline.com). Their "Loud Mouth" system is reported to be quite impressive.

I like this. Not too obnoxious.

This might also be fun.

You can't get rid of the cats, it will come back to haunt you, I promise. If you're running 3 inch stock pipes then leave it alone. 3inch is more than enough to flow. I wouldn't mess with any smog equipment, esp. the things that will affect OBD2 sys. Your car comes equiped with a short term, erasable codes and permanent non-erasable codes. If *any* of those non-erasable codes are tripped signifying an OBD2 by-pass you'll be classified as a gross polluter and sent to a test only center... Once you're classified as a gross polluter you'll be required to smog your car yearly. It's just not worth it anymore.

Here in California your car has to pass a visual before they even hook it up to the smog tester.
Without cats he won't even pass the visual.

ah shaddap! 'Course, most of the guys that race around here like to break their cats and leave the empty shell attached to their system so it'll pass a quick inspection. Smog, on the other hand, is something else entirely.

I already have more horsepower than almost any other one of you guys's cars have... so I'm not looking for performance gain. I just want a nice non-stock sound. And I'd go with SLP, but it's just too damned loud. Sounds mean though. I leave my house at 4:30 in the morning, I don't want the neighbors to hate me :)

So don't get the loudmouth. SLP's other stuff can be pretty tame. I forget, what does the SS put out? And I thought you had the base Camaro with the 3800 V6?

I traded in the ol' tired V6 for a supersport back in december. I finally settled for a magnaflow 1 in 2 out system. It's hard to do a cat-back system cheaply when you got 2 cats right by the manifolds. It sounds good I think with the magnaflow. Quieter and more mellow than stock at idle, and real tight and throaty when I romp on it. Sounds different from all the flowmaster camaros out there, so I love it. Unique isn't ALWAYS bad :)

And we're looking at between 320-335HP coming in around 3800RPM Theotherjoe.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys... maybe when I get some more cash and get into a location other than gay old cali' I'll go for something a little more high performance, but for right now I just wanted sound.

Peace.

Dang. I finally get a 3800 Series II that's faster than yours and you've traded it in for an SS. :P Never thought of Edelbrock. Bet you'd REALLY wake the neighbors with those.

See, for him to be a "riceboy", that would require him to actually have a POS to rice up. ;) Its kinda hard to rice up a camaro since they actually look good to start with.

LOL, still no reason to delete my post!! I didn't see how I broke any rules.

Also, he his car apparently doesn't have an engine that makes that sound stock so he must be trying to make up for something!! And remember, if it doesn't come stock you are a riceboy!!

Can't add anything but sound and better engine parts to be original!!

It's not exactly like I took my 89 Nissan, lowered it to the ground, added a tailfin, put hood scoops on it, put underglows on it, painted raceing stripes on it (I have some small silver removable stripes on there temporarily), added 10 DRIVEING lights (I have 2 FOG lights used for FOG not for driveing around blinding people), slapped V-Tec stickers and raceing banners all over it, and a farting muffler (all they do is make you sound like you need some Pepto Bismol really really bad and annoy other drivers) such as the one SR's working on adding. Anyway, that's the only point I'm trying to make.

I don't see how a farting muffler is going to add much more to his car than noise. Sure it is a fast car but noise is just that, noise.

At least what I added to my car doesn't blind other drivers or wake people up in the middle of the night.

Now there are several kinds of drivers:

Stock: They drive everything as it came.

Racer: These guys like to buy fancy cars, and usually only add performance and sound upgrades.

Married man/woman/single girl car: Usually drive family vehicles such as a van or a regular joe car that goes pretty slow and they drive them slow. They don't really care about speed or looks, just about getting from point A to point B safely.

Stylers: They just like to dress a car up and have fun with it. Even if it isn't that great but they happen to like the car anyway. They just like to personalise whatever they drive to feel like they own it.They don't claim they have anything more than they actually have. There are many people around my town that love to do this sort of thing. Some claim them as ricers when they are not.

Ricers: These guys go way overkill on the decorations and drive like maniacs claiming that they have something that they don't. They generally lower their cars improperly and usually any performance upgrades they add, they screw up on, they also tend to add V-Tec stickers, Underglows, DRIVEING (note: Driveing not Fog) lights, farting mufflers, massive stereo systems, and usually a tailfin and sometimes even a paint job of some type. They go to fast around corners and tend to forget what such words in the english language such as STOP means.

So, there you have it in a can. :)

Messenger, a cat-back system is not a muffler, it's the entire piping from header to exhaust that bypasses (replaces actually) the polution-control equipment and muffler, thereby increasing exhaust flow (which in turn increases intake flow), which means somewhat more power and louder detonation noise. A fart-can muffler tries to fake that noise, a cat-back is the real deal.

Bash, you're close. A cat back is just that, an exhaust system from the cat back.

Better exhaust has quite a few benefits, especially for forced induction systems. It can help solve the problem of boost stacking, for one, and has nothing to do with making your car "loud" or anything.

Actually mess.. You obviously haven't heard my stock exhaust. It sounds pretty damned close to what it does now. I just quieted it up and tightened the sound. I don't need to prove anything, so I don't put stickers on my car, or put ungodly loud fart pipes on it, or blinking lights, or whatever. That's the difference between a normal mod, and a riceboy mod. You spruce it up to make others THINK it's more than it really is. I spruce it up because it IS what it is.

You can't polish a turd and call it gold and not be a riceboy holmes. Drop out of the game sunshine, you lost :)

Oh and one more thing... A magnaflow on a V8 is HARDLY a fartpipe ;)

Heh, I give you thumbs up then cause I was thinking you were shooting for a fart pipe. You aren't a ricer yetbut I'll be waiting RAAAAAARRRRR!! ;)

BTW, my car doesn't have a thing on it that states anything about it being more than it is. I never lowered it to the ground, added driveing lights, or a tailfin or an underglow so it isn't rice yet.

What people don't get about me is that I'm a bit old school. I was born into a family that loved the 50's era when people commonly decorated their cars for fun, and it was considered cool and fun. Not rice. People take themselves too seriously.
