Leave it to the Roosky's to find a way to make a buck.
On funding for the manned Mars mission:

"Aerospace Systems, a commercial company seeking to fund the project using private capital, suggested it could involve a reality TV show."

food and services for the long trip to mars, also "a garden full of plants, and everything else, ready to goto mars" STOWED SAFELY FOR THE ZERO G TRIP, THEN READY TO DEPLOY ON MARS. assembled in orbit, in only 10years.

seems like a rediculously unachieveable claim to me.

and as for this suggesting of a TV show, you gotta remember that mars rotates, so without a satelite infrastructure you won't be able to transmit 24/7, also you would have to have a worldwide array of dishs on earth facing mars to pick up the constant HIGH BANDWIDTH signal, that dish hire time costs a lot of $. and i'm not sure if mars has the satelite network capable of this amount of heavy use data traffic anyway.

and lol @ the "and now for something completely different!" the article does in teh last 2 paragraphs:
Earlier this week the US authorities issued a licence for the first time to a company hoping to make a manned sub-orbital space flight in a privately owned rocket.
hmm, obviously not a licence for space. so i wonder what this "license" is.
maybe they have to fly over USA soil during the flight launch.

ps: what's with the "trust the russians to make a buck" comment woody?

Maybe we can put all the producers of the current reality shows on the ship and arrange for it to have an "accident".

heh i'd like to watch them on mars. safe in the knowledge that they are far from me. i wish the producers of the shows would follow them though.

Roid this is but a 1st step that the start-up space companies need to get licensed for full space flight certification (and a 10 million dollar prize). Burt Rutan is the recipient of the license (refer back to the "Rutan is God" thread)

As to the Rooskies, they will do anything for money...just ask them :)
