I have been working on a system for a friend of mine.

They have dialup internet, and recently they started get page cannot be displayed error. And I discovered that the proxy setting would turn back on every single time I would reconnect the internet, the use a proxy setting for this connection setting that is.

Well I tried a system restore, clean boot, IE with no add-ons and to no avail could i fix it, the wierd thing is it works fine once i uncheck it and open a few IE browsers for it, but once i disconnect and reconnect the dialup the setting gets checked again. Any suggestions on how to fix it?

Probably a virus. Did you delete and recreate the dial up connection?
Check in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\\Software\\Microsoft\\Windows\\CurrentVersion\\Internet Settings\\Connections

Hey, Captain ... I'd bet you that your friend had AOL from way back installed on that system. Most likely the source of the persistent proxy problem. Clean off anything AOL and hope for the best.

The use Peoplepc as there isp, and the wierd part, I just recently wiped there system, doing the HP PC restore on it, then doing windows updates then tossing people PC on then it was working fine for a few days, then it went bam, mind you I wasnt able to do much like a virus scan or anything, only had like 45 minutes to see if it was ISP issue or a machine issue. Once they call me again im gonna take another look at it.

Well after much banging my head on the wall I found out that peoplepc uses a web acceleration setup that uses a proxy setup, well aparently there is a patch for the software for XP SP3 that you have to get from them, mind you its no where to be found on there website.... I downloaded it and it fixed the problem
