Trying to instal Fallout 3 on the new comp and I get a:

Unhandled Exception
Error# 0x80040706
Description: Object Reference not set

I called tech support and am directed here:
http://consumerdocs.installshield.com/s ... &sliceId=1

I follow directions for version 11/no

When I go to install the 1100.exe it will not install.

I then try installing The Witcher (a 2nd new game for xmas) and it hangs during installation and stops responding.

So for a test I try installing a older game (Homeworld 2) and it installs just fine. Previously I have installed UT2004/Battlefield2/Gothic3/Sins of a Solar Empire with no problem. So now I wonder, is there some aspect of these newer games that are having problems installing with win xp sp3?

Any help would be appreciated

Use windowsupdate to get the latest updates to the windows installer and then try again.

SP3 should contain the latest installer.

Not sure why Witcher isn't installing, but it may be that Fallout 3 broke the install database. Or you have some \"unwanted\" programs installed (like Daemon Tools. Not sure how Tagès deals w/ them during install.) As for Fallout 3 -- IIRC it contains SecuROM which may be the problem. What CD/DVD burning software do you have installed ? Any virtual CD/DVD drive software (like Daemon Tools, Alcohol 120%, PowerISO) ?

In general I would recommend: return Fallout 3 and buy it from Steam, that way you don't have to deal w/ SecuROM.

I do have Ahead Nero as burning software so maybe that is a problem? Anyway Krom, I tried widows update but it just kept scanning my comp. for like a half hour and didn't stop scanning so I quit the updater. Not sure what is going on. I have Zone Alarm running but didn't recieve any blocking messages regarding updater.

Grendel I'll try talking to fallouts tech guy one more time and if there is no results I'll take game back and try your suggestion.

um disable tea-timer/windows defender or whatever other registry protection software you have running

or unload those daemon tools - SecuRom CP hard at work
