I'm wondering whether its worth it to upgrade to vista from XP with my upgrade to 6gb (and an i7 system).
My usage is primarily office work and gaming (some dvd video usage).

I dont have a lot of time to deal with OS issues, and XP has been stable for me for a long time. Is Vista stable enough to use now? Or should I wait for windows 7?

Vista is pretty stable right now. Rumor has it that you can upgrade the Ultimate editions to Windows 7 for free once it comes out, not sure if that's true tho

There's an old saying that goes, "If it ain't broke, don't try to fix it." Your computer is no exception, especially if you don't have time to deal with OS issues. If you upgrade from XP to Vista, you'll most likely find that:

1. Even with the increased ram, your system will be substantially slower.
2. Not all of your old programs that you used in XP will work in Vista.
3. There may not be device drivers and software for all of you XP hardware, so you may need to upgrade various components and peripherals.
4. There's really no point to upgrading since in another year Win 7 will be out, then ur OS will be out of date again.

My suggestion is that you wait till the final release of Win 7 is out (since it is better than Vista anyway) to upgrade, and count on either buying a new computer or redoing your current one.

Good points...I dont really need vista for anything. However, since all the components on my system will be/are main stream (intel i7 cpu, WD HD, Asus MB, SB x-fi, Nvidia gtx260, sony dvd w/r,and a media reader that I'm not sure who makes it), windows 7 shouldnt be an issue with drivers.

I am going through with the upgrade now, but really, even if Windows 7 is lousy like vista, I still dont have to upgrade (just like to take advantage of the extra RAM).

I actually dont know anything about windows 7...

Heh, and somewhere I remember reading that xp 64 was something to avoid.

I have both Vista and XP on my system on different hard drives. Aside from graphical differences you pretty much can not tell them apart for performance once Vista has been running for a few hours and has properly cached everything. I usually end up running one OS or the other for several months on end, purely because I am too lazy to switch between them.

On an up to date computer with >3 GB of RAM, you won't be bothered by any of Vista's performance problems.

Although you may have one issue with drivers: that Creative audio card. Creative has been horrible for driver support in the entire last 10 years, and there is no indication it will get any better anytime soon. I'm actually kind of amazed Creative is still in business because their support is so bad.

I happened to catch someone selling Ultimate for $100 on Craigslist last month (it was legit, they had gotten it free from a vendor or something); I'm just now installing it.

If that means I get a free Windows 7 upgrade, sweet.

As to the original question, Vista has been very stable for me as well. I now have it on three separate machines, including my wife's laptop (which only has 1Gb RAM at the moment, but still works well for normal everyday stuff).

Don't bother with ultimate. You'll wind up disabling a lot of junk that you probably won't use, unless you're a media junkie (and I'm not).

man, I'm right there with you on that. Creative has so dominated the market, they pretty much shut out their competition .. or bought them. Much of their competition went into the highend and "industrial" markets.

Still, I would love to see a new choice.

No kidding- shortly after XP was out, Creative released a very buggy driver for one of their old sound cards, and refused to fix it when everyone complained. Someone finally got up the nerve to reverse engineer the driver, fix it, and post it to the net. Creative gave him a warm thank you by sewing him up the ass.

Well, someone should counter-sue them for being a crappy company... or something. And they should add logitech to that list too.

ReadyMan, if you have to buy hardware now, just use Windows XP with Service Pack 3 and then do a fresh install of Windows Se7en some time after it is released to stores. The other alternative is to use Windows Server 2008 and turn it into a workstation OS. I heard that is a great (and expensive =P) option, but I haven't been able to test it yet. =P

Yes, I think I'll wait for windows 7. If it's stable, I'll make the leap.
